Introductory Notes:

The text for 811 is composed of materials compiled or written by several of the Skyline teachers and is available in the bookstore. The big ideas are to (1) Develop and improve your estimation skills and (2) Practice being a better student. Some of the course content you will see is . . .

  • Estimation skills in approximating calculations involving money, measurement and other real world applications.
  • Basic Arithmetic (+, –, X, ÷) with counting numbers and decimals and applications.
  • Understanding the order of operations and the ways in which those operations behave.
  • Operations with signed numbers.
  • Applications of ratio and proportion.
  • Applications and operations with fractions and decimals.
  • Problem solving and game strategy.

 

Materials:

Any scientific calculator (look for exponent keys) is required for this course. The calculator required for math 110/111 and beyond is the TI-83+ or TI-84 graphing calculator. If you plan to take more math courses, you may wish to buy a TI-83+ now. I will demonstrate the use of graphing calculators during the class as well as regular scientific calculators.

Prerequisite:

Appropriate score on placement test.

Help:

It is essential that you attempt and complete all assignments in the class. In the process of working the problems you will develop all the skills that will see you though college.

Tutoring:

Office hours. Either during my posted office hours or by arrangement, you should come to see me for help. The people in your class know the most about what you are studying and therefore make the best sources of help. Please try to find other student in the class to study with and please come to see me if you have any questions.

The Learning Center (TLC) is an outstanding resource for tutoring in all of your classes.
You should visit TLC at the slightest sign of confusion or just as a place to sit and work in a
supportive environment. The Learning Center staff is well trained and dedicated solely to your success, so don't waste this resource!

Tutorials for the TI-83 are available in the TLC, on DVD (ask me) and online.

Grading Information:

Homework, Quizzes, Projects, in–class assignments and LSKL: (35%)
Quizzes (10%)
3-4 Tests (40%)
Final (15%)

I will drop your worst test score (Not the final). There will be no makeup tests. If you are late for a test you will have only the remaining time to complete the test (so don't be late). If you know you are going to miss a test date, contact me at least three days in advance and we can arrange an alternate test.

I will omit one late assignment or if you submit all assignments on time, I will drop your lowest score.
I will give quizzes often. I will drop your worst quiz score. There will be no makeup quizzes.

Grading Scale:
                      A ≥ 90%
                      80% ≤ B < 90%
                      70% ≤ C < 80%
                      60% ≤ D < 70%
                      F < 60%
