The ESOL Lab in Room 5110 and 5111

ESOL 655: This lab course provides practice in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary for all English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). ESOL students can enroll in ESOL 655 and earn college credits while building their English skills!

How Do I Enroll in ESOL 655?
Enroll in ESOL 655 through WebSMART and select the number of units you would like to enroll in:

0.5 unit = 24 hours = approximately 1 ½ hrs per week (up to 6 hrs at home)
1.0 unit = 48 hours = approximately 3 hrs per week (up to 12 hrs at home)
1.5 units = 72 hours = approximately 4 ½ hrs per week (up to 18 hrs at home)
2.0 units = 96 hours = approximately 6 hrs per week (up to 24 hrs at home)
2.5 units = 120 hours = approximately 7 ½ hrs per week (up to 30 hrs at home)
3.0 units = 144 hours = approximately 9 hrs per week (up to 37 hrs at home)

How do I start getting assistance and earning college units?

  • ENROLL IN 655 AND CHOOSE YOUR UNITS.
  • Learn How to Use the Lab. Come to visit the lab at a time when a tutor is there and can show you the materials and the check-in process.
  • Set Your Goals. What do you want to learn? What do you need help with?
  • Make Your Own Schedule. Set aside regular weekly time to come in and work towards your goals.
  • Do You Need More Help and Direction? You can take a writing diagnostic: http://www.smccd.edu/accounts/sippell/655/docs/655intake.doc
    Bring the finished diagnostic to a tutor during tutoring hours in the ESOL Lab (room 5110). The tutor will review it and give you a special study program to follow that will help you reach your goals.
  • ESOL 655 students can also use all the resources in the Writing & Reading Lab at any time:
    • Work one on one with any writing and reading tutor. Click here for lab hours and tutor schedules in the Writing and Reading Lab.
    • Use the lab's handbooks, handouts, and software.
    • Join the English practice groups
    • Use the Virtual Reading & Writing Lab to access online information and practice on grammar, writing development, research and citation, discipline specific guides.
