Coach Bios
Tom Reudy, Head Coach
I was born in San Francisco and raised in Millbrae. I started swimming at the age of 9 for the Millbrae Otters. Eventually the Otters merged with the San Mateo swim team, and we later became the Golden Gate Aquatics swim team. I was a top five U.S. age group swimmer, and I continued swimming until I was 18. I was offered a number of college swimming scholarships, but unfortunately I was burned out, and I stopped swimming after I left school. Soon after that I began my career in the entertainment field and eventually moved to Los Angeles.
It was during this time that I found my way back to the pool. I started swimming with a Masters team, never thinking that I would start competing again. But I found that I still had that competitive gene in me, and I really started training hard. I was shocked and excited to find that my body still responded to the intense workouts. Over the next 20 years or so, I achieved Masters World and National records as well as All-American honors, and I also discovered that I had a passion for coaching. Having been asked to fill in as coach for the Masters team from time to time, I found that I really enjoyed doing it and I started coaching on a regular basis. So swimming and coaching have been a very big part of my life.
I am so fortunate and excited to be doing what I love ... coaching. And to be back in my home town coaching the San Mateo Masters is something I would have never expected. The San Mateo Masters has the honor and recognition of being the very first Masters swim team in the world, and I am lucky to be part of that history.
Jane Worden, Assistant Coach
Jane priorities are being a Mom of 3/wife, Coach and Athlete. Fortunately the Mom and Coach roles have many similarities - helping kids and athletes find their way in life or a pool is pretty much the same; try harder, get your rest, do your best, be independent but seek help when needed, the list goes on. The good thing is Jane has lots of coaching and swimming experienceto bring to the Mom side of the equation. She's swam since she was 6, made a US World Championship team at the ripe age of 14, swam at Stanford and still swims as a Master. She's coached at Stanford Masters as a sub for years, coached at PASA for a year now as well as a little summer league team. She loves being a Coach almost as much as being a Mom, however she would welcome any advice on how to raise a teenager (her oldest child will be 13 in August). She'll be sure to weave the advice back into her coaching.
Katie Elgaaen, Aquatics Director & Assistant Coach
Katie Elgaaen is a lifetime swimmer. Highlights of her swimming resume include Pan-American Games gold and silver medal, US Olympic Trials finalist, All American and team captain of the nationally ranked University of California swim team, first place finishes at La Jolla Rough Water Swim, Lake Berryessa, Trans Tahoe & Maui Channel relays. Top 3 finishes at Waikiki Rough Water, Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
Although retired from racing, Katie continues to swim for fitness and coaches both kids and adults. Also a mother of 3 young kids, Katie enjoys spending time chasing them around the house and teaching them to love the water.
Katie has been an Aquatics Director, swim coach, swimming, spinning and lifeguard instructor in the Bay Area for the past 20 years. Her passion is to teach people of all ages to love swimming for life.
