In this paper, you will be analyzing language thought the specifics of perception. 1. Please give a detailed account of two language interactions with another person where you believe that the language either; a. Created a stronger sense of community or b.) Resulted in a miscommunication or conflict. This should be about the language, not the subject. Use the systems of language, (phonology, semantics & syntax) to identify the differences that you noticed in this exchange. Each exchange should be no longer than 3 minutes.
2. Now, explain your perception of this conversation. Talk about selection. Why did you notice or remember it? Talk about organization. What about the other person’s language use led you to put them into a certain cultural identity? Talk about Interpretation. What value judgment did their language use leave you with? Did you judge them either negatively of positively? The best papers will give specific and relevant details citing both the lectures & book.

YOU WILL GIVE A FOUR MINUTE ORAL PRESENTATION TO THE CLASS ABOUT THE TOPIC AND RESEARCH THAT YOU CHOOSE EARLIER IN THE SEMESTER. YOU WILL DO ADDITIONAL OUTSIDE RESEARCH TO AID YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL. MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE THE ORIGINS OF THE ARTICLES AND RESEARCH. YOU SHOULD ALSO EXPLAIN YOUR TOPIC, TELL US THE HISTORY & DESCRIBE IT IN THE PRESENT DAY.
