As employees of the district we all have access to a variety of electronic data and services. The security of this data is all of our responsibilities. As you may know, we recently had some staff share their email passwords as the result of falling victim to an email phishing scam. I am sure that we will once again be challenged by cyber thieves – it is important that we continue to use common sense and not fall victim to these attacks! When these scammers gain access to our accounts they use them to send out tens of thousands of messages to future victims. This can often lead to our email domain (@smccd.edu) being “blacklisted”. This causes our legitimate messages sent to outside systems such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Comcast, etc. to bounce.
NEVER provide your password or other personal information in an email message. ITS will NEVER ask you to disclose your password. If you receive a message and are unsure if it is legitimate, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at helpcenter@smccd.edu or x6543
Additionally, it has also come to our attention that a number of people still have passwords that have not changed from the default they were given many years ago. Ultimately ITS will be adjusting our security system to require the regular changing of passwords. Until that time, I strongly urge you to make sure your passwords are secure and are not something simple to guess. This is the most effective action you can take to help keep all of our data secure.
