Alan Miller is all about Information & Insight.  He brings over thirty years of experience in the information technology industry to the Construction Planning Department.  Alan has certificates in software project management, systems analysis, database design and development, web development, many software languages and in logistics.  He uses a large array of tools to make the “zeroes and ones” into exploitable knowledge.  He ensures that the random information developed during business activities is transformed into arrows that lead us toward success.

Alan started and owned a software development business managing thirty-five professionals in 1979.  This business was one of the first professional companies that specialized in producing business software for networked PCs.  After selling the business, he spent eleven years in information technology engineering and management positions at a Fortune 100 company. He then spent four years in various engineering and management roles at two “dot coms” and was the manager of software QA for the largest search engine company in the world.  His experience successfully translating business needs into process and software-based solutions led to his ability to listen to and understand non-technical people and transform their needs into designs resulting in software which enabled those businesses to succeed.

Alan has worked at the San Mateo County Community College District in the Facilities Planning & Operations Department in a technical support role since 2004. When the Construction Planning Department started in 2006, he wanted to be a part of this exciting new group.  “I want to continue to transform business needs into technical solutions enabling the evolution of facts into insight.  Too often organizations have lots of data, but it’s worthless because it isn’t organized.  You can have the best systems in the world in place, but if you can’t get information how and when you want it, it’s less than useless.  It costs a lot to create the information.  A “write-only” system just adds burden to the department without providing rewards: insight.  I’m here to help make sure the team gets such rewards.”
