MINUTES
OCTOBER 14, 2005

DR. LORI ADRIAN - Vice President of Student services

Dr. Lori Adrian presented the most recent policy on smoking on campus. The policy includes prohibiting smoking 20 feet from any District or College doorway, entrance or fresh air intake vent. The policy would also incorporate adding signage, moving ashtrays 25 feet from all entry points, placing benches in appropriate areas, enforcing smoking regulations and educating students on the health effects of smoking. AS suggestions were also made to ban smoking all together, designate a smoking space, and holding a campus forum to discuss the issue further.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Carla Campillo

College Budget Council had its first meeting. Subjects discussed were the allocation model, accreditation procedures, and emergency preparedness drills which will begin shortly.

The Art on Campus Task Force presented its recommendations for art work to be placed throughout the campus. The art is meant to express Skyline College’s commitment to access and respect for all regardless of "level of preparation, socio-economic status, cultural, religious or ethnic background or disability." The artwork will be placed both indoors and outdoors and consist of different mediums. A motion was passed to accept recommendations, then amended to include adjustments so that the art selection process includes others.

At the District Academic Governing Council meeting, Ron Galatolo proposed that we hire a new educational vice chancellor. It was noted by members present that we are missing the "voice of an academician" in our top-level administration. Also covered in the meeting were a get-together with faculty retirees and staff, an update on district budget committee and evaluations for online courses.

Kathleen Feinblum gave a report on the Museum of Tolerance weekend that was held in Los Angeles, October 9-11. The activities included a tour of the Simon Wiesenthal Center dedicated to educating the public on the Holocaust and other current genocides. As well, there were diversity training workshops, guest speakers, and the opportunity to interact with other district employees.

ACCREDITATION - Ray Hernandez

Ray Hernandez presented changes to the Accreditation Standards Steering Committee. Motion was approved to add Linda Van Sciver as a co-chair to the Resources Committee. The Steering Committee will then recommend writing teams members.

AFT - Rick Hough

Negotiations are starting next month.

The AFT discussed ways to communicate with faculty on all three campuses.

There will be voter registration tables on campus to provide information on the special election in November.

SLOAC - Jonathan Freeman and Karen Wong

Jonathan Freeman presented a proposal to redefine obligations of the research committee by changing its bylaws from:

2. Shall act as a resource to the Senate and College in matters of institutional research.

To:

A motion was approved to postpone discussion to a later date. However, the Research Committee can work with the proposed change in bylaws then permanently change the wording when the SLOs are better polished.

TREASURER - Fermin Irigoyen

As of Friday October 14, 2005 our account balance is $1,944.70.

The AS received the faculty direct deposit (74 faculty members) in the amount of $1,540. In addition, we had 8 faculty members pay directly to the treasurer for a total of 82 faculty members paying academic senate dues.

We received and deposited $192 for the Bay Meadows social gathering on Friday October 14, 2005. We cut two checks for the following amounts related to the Bay Meadows social gathering: 1) $216 Made Payable to Bay Meadows 2) $200 Made Payable to Karen Olesen. There was an additional $6 bank fee per check charged to the AS Account.)

CURRICULUM COMMITTEE - Christine Roumbanis

Program Review presentations will be on 10/19 and on 11/30 in Room 5132B.

The Program Review Subcommittee is reviewing Program Review’s effectiveness and its incorporation of SLOs. The subcommittee’s recommendation is that the self study be more reflective.

The new course outline template, which includes SLO language, has been approved by the Curriculum Committee and is on the web.

The next Curriculum Committee meeting is Friday 10/21.

ED POLICY - Garrett Nicol

Garrett Nicol distributed the results of the Academic Integrity Survey that was conducted online. Suggested was that academic integrity be couched in SLO language and added to course outlines.

Data is needed on the students’ perception of cheating and another survey is in order.

The Disabled Students Grievance Policy has been set but there is no official form.

SHARI SNITOVSKY - Professional Personnel

Applications for the Trustees and PFE grant proposals are now available.

EEOAC - Jacqui Escobar

Recommendation for the change of name and charge of EEOAC Committee was distributed. The new name will be "Stewardship for Equity, Equal Employment and Diversity (SEEED) Advisory Committee." Motion was passed to approve the new name and new charge.

ASSC - Taylor Angel

The ASSC allocated funds for Respitory Therapy students to attend a conference.

The Homophobia Forum is on October 20th.

The ASSC approved $2,500 for the Women on Writing Conference in March.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Karen Wong - An upcoming workshop on the nuts-and-bolts of SLOs will be on Oct 27 from 2:00 to 4:00 in Room 5131

The Marti Gras Festival to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief will be on November 2, 11 am to 2 pm, and 5 pm to 7 pm in front of Building 2.

The MOT sponsored play Kicks will be on Nov 9 at 2:00 and at 7:00, and Nov. 10 at 1:00. Both showings are in the theatre. To get tickets, see Donna Elliot at x 4270.

Flu Shots will be given Tuesday, October 18 from 11-1 and from 6-8. The cost is $20.

CASAC and DASAC, the organization which is in charge of distributing money from campus concessions, needs a faculty rep. Both groups meet two times per semester.

Ray Hernandez - The administration had a retreat to look at issues including the educational master plan.

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS

Inquiry into number of professional commitment activities.

Revisit the Smoking Policy.

Revisit the Art on Campus Task Force recommendations.

Research Committee SLOAC follow ups.

Invite Kevin Chak, bookstore manager.
