REPORT ON COLLEGE COUNCIL MEETING - Carla Campillo
Cathy Hassons website has information on the Fresh Look project. Jeffrey Acidera will be making a presentation on the Fresh Look Project at a future meeting.
As of January 17, there will be designated smoking areas. The AS intends to pick a date for the campus forum to discuss the issue.
There needs to be a link between the Research Committee and IPC. It was requested that Nick Kapp give us an update of IPC at the next meeting.
The bond measure was approved in the last election. Some projects that need funding include: building refurbishing, ADA accommodations, road repair, and earthquake control measures. All projects will be approved with a collaborative decision.
There will be a Skyline Shines Award for both a Skyline employee and a community member.
College Budget Committee did not meet. Kathy Blackwood is coming in December to present the new allocation model.
The budget for next year will be discussed at the December meeting.
TREASURERS REPORT AND DUES DISCUSSION - Fermin Irigoyen
Current Balance is 1,944.70
Fermin Irigoyen and Dennis Eadus opened a discussion on ways we could get the non-paying employees to pay AS dues. Currently, 82 of 114 faculty members have paid dues in the amount of $1,540. Some suggestions to increase our amount of dues collected were to: 1) propose that those who do not want to pay dues donate to a student scholarship fund instead, 2) collect dues from part-time instructors at a lower rate, 3) focus on newer faculty, and 4) have a chart illustrating how dues money is spent. Further discussion was postponed until January.
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE - Christine Roumbanis
Christines:
The Curriculum Committee discussed the Degree Audit Steering Committees recommendation for converting quarter units to semester units to satisfy AA/AS major requirements and graduation requirements. The recommendation was adopted that calculation will be based on the total units from incoming transcripts. If the fractional remainder of the total units earned exceeds 0.6 unites, the total will be rounded up to the next whole unit. Therefore, the student would receive no more than 0.4 units in total. The unite conversion apply only to the total units in the major and not to individual course unit conversions.
Arthurs version
"If the fractional remainder of the total units earned exceeds
0.6 units, the total will be rounded up to the next whole unit.
Therefore, the student would receive no more than 0.4 units in total.
The unit conversions apply only to the total units in the major and not to individual course unit conversions."
The District Curriculum Committee recommended that all 3 district curriculum committees work on the same issues at the same time so that dialog is mutual.
The Curriculum Committee now has two models for a peer online evaluation.
The models need to be approved by the Academic Senate and the AFT.
ED POLICY - Garrett Nicol
The disabled student policy is a federal law interpreted by the District. The District has procedures for those students appealing an accommodation refusal. There was a question about the starting point for the 5-day window to appeal accommodations. The matter will be sent to the District for further review.
The cheating policy student question has been forwarded to Cathy Hasson.
ACCREDITATION - Donna Bestock and Ray Hernandez
The Campus Climate Study Survey Plan is moving forward. The Survey Plan is based on the steering committees recommendation and the Noel-Levitz questionnaire. The questionnaires purpose is to measure current students attitudes and perceptions of Skyline College. Employee surveys are also part of the Plan. As there are no good pre-developed surveys for faculty, we are asking other schools for advice. It is important that instructors distributing student surveys in their class be notified beforehand, so they can plan their lessons accordingly.
The proposed student survey questions were distributed for perusal. The list of survey questions was met with approval but the survey could use a few more questions.
AFT - Rick Hough
The dues restructuring proposal passed by a wide margin.
DISTRICT ACADEMIC SENATE - Nick Kapp
The degree audit was discussed.
There will be a long term discussion on the class size issue. It was suggested that the AS and the AFT have a joint meeting.
It was proposed that the position of vice chancellor of education be reopened.
RESEARCH COMMITTEE, SEEED, ASSC - There were no reports.
