Skyline Shines

New five-week summer sessions: One of the strategies of the college enrollment growth plan was the offering of the regular 6 and 8 week summer sessions along with two new 5-week summer sessions. While the usual summer sessions started on June 19, 2006, the first of the two 5-week sessions started on June 5, 2006. By starting the summer session two weeks early, Skyline College was able to offer more options that enable students to complete summer courses. A range of classes are being offered in the new 5-week sessions including general education coursed (such as Art, Anthropology, History, Speech, English, Psychology, Economics, Fitness, Dance, American Sign Language, Reading, Music, Math, Philosophy, Oceanography, and Political Science), Workforce development classes such as (CAOT, Business, Early Childhood Education) and Counseling. The classes are pretty full.

There are many people to thank for helping implement this strategy. Many thanks and kudos to the faculty and staff in the One-Stop area such as A&R, Financial Aid, Counseling, Assessment and Placement, Cashiers, EOP&S/CalWORKs/Care and the Health Center; the area was buzzing at a time they typically counted on to be able to play catch-up. They served with a smile and a zeal that was very helpful. The Bookstore and Cafeteria staff adjusted their operation times. The facilities department, particularly the custodians were ready and willing to help with the additional two weeks of operations. Security was quite helpful with operations and the parking. The Library and Learning Center faculty and staff adjusted the hours of operation. Finally, the instructional faculty, staff and administration were instrumental in scheduling an implementing a successful option for students.

We will be conducting an analysis of the impact of the session on student access and success, as well as on the overall enrollment.
