Topping Out ceremony for new Building 7A on Monday: You will see in your mailboxes a flyer announcing the "topping out" ceremony for our new Science building. Just as happened with the new student center a few weeks ago, the ceremony will involve an opportunity for anyone interested to sign the beam, and then it will be hoisted up onto the building. Please join us in former Parking Lot 7, near the construction trailer, if you would like to participate. To get there, go up to Lot 8 and then walk downhill, or go in front of Building 5 to the loop road and walk uphill from there.

Skyline College CITD wins mini-grant to address barriers to international trade and to expand international trade services to the North Bay: The Bay Area Community College Consortium recently awarded a mini-grant to the Skyline College CITD to expand the delivery of international trade seminars from Marin County to Santa Rosa. We are happy to be the recipient of this grant, it helps remove some of the barriers to international trade facing small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the North Bay Area. The program, appropriately named Creating Export Opportunities (CEO) specifically targets women, handicapped, minority entrepreneurs, as well as, the main stream SMEs.

Skyline on national radio: In the 1840’s, two physicians who insisted that doctors could prevent the transmission of disease by washing their hands were ridiculed by their colleagues. The MicrobeWorld radio program staff interviewed Chris Case, and based on that interview, wrote and produced a feature called Unsung Heroes that aired nationally on September 20 on over 90 radio stations across the U.S. The piece is now archived at http://www.flpradio.com/microbeworld/2005-SEPT-16-30.htm. You can access the audio file by opening this link and then clicking on September 20.

Holiday serenades: Thanks to Billy Robinson’s horn quartet–the group Billy as well as Buzz Wilkes, Arnold Sears, and Dick Leland. They treated us all to a series of beautiful horn serenades yesterday with their wonderful music ringing through the halls of various buildings around the campus.

Update on College Council:

Accreditation update: Training for self-study writing team members is being planned for early February. The student survey will be conducted in late February/early March. Faculty whose classes are selected for the survey sample will be contacted to request their participation.

Fresh Look Project update: The Council received a report on the draft recommendations from the project. As they are finalized, the Council will be involved in the implementation plans.

Smoking issue update: The Council reviewed the plans for the new approach to smoking at the college effective January 17, including notification to faculty, staff and students, the forum, and other implementation issues. The college-wide forum slated for mid-February is designed to be an assessment of how it is working in terms of smokers and non-smokers living together at Skyline.

IPC Charter and Bylaws: This item was presented by Cathy Hasson, Director of Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, at the last meeting. The Senate will review it before final action by the College Council in January.

Governance model: The Council reviewed two tools designed to ensure smooth functioning of our governance system: a graphic depiction of the college’s governance structure and a list of the committees along with the bodies or persons to whom the committees give advice or reports. The current drafts will be discussed with the College Budget Committee and the Institutional Planning Committee and then will come back to the Council for finalization.

Program Review Summary: The Council reviewed the summary of the program reviews for the 2003-04 year and discussed the numerous ways in which this information is utilized in the decision-making process. The summary is available at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skycurr/PROGREV.HTM Click on 2003-04 Program Review Summary. It will be discussed by the Academic Senate this Friday.

Next meeting: January 25, 2:10 pm, Room 1319
