President's Updates
Skyline Shines
November 10, 2005
Bond passage: What a joy it is to know that we will be able to continue with the renovation and expansion of the colleges facilities. We will begin immediately on this exciting and important work and will keep you posted on it and ensure that the affected building users are involved in the planning. Hooray!
Executive Report to the Board of Trustees: The report I gave to the Board of Trustees Wednesday night is available at this address on our website: http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skypio/boardrpt/index.html
Topping Off Ceremony for the new Student Support and Community Service
Center:
The uppermost beams for the new Building 6 were signed by many dozens of Skyline
students and staff, along with community members. The two beams were thoroughly
covered, top to bottom, front and back. They are now in their place at
the topmost part of the building.
The rain held off nicely while we enjoyed the moment and looked forward to the day when we will be able to occupy the building, about January 2007. Thanks to all who joined us and to the many people who made the occasion possible and also to the many people involved in arranging for the celebration.
Fresh Look Project and Student Focus Groups: On Opening Day you heard me talk about the Fresh Look Project, aimed at a review of how Skyline College communicates with current and future students and the public about the college and to check on how we are doing, identify what is working well, and to find out whether any of it could use retooling. Part of that work has involved focus groups with students which have provided us with a wealth of good information to help us with this project and others, such as our accreditation self study. If you would like a peek at how students see the college, treat yourself to a look at the Executive Report on the focus groups, at this address under Fresh Look Focus Groups: http://www.smccd.edu/accounts/skypro/
Skyline College CITD and the US Department of Commerce join efforts to address barriers to international trade: Skyline College CITD and the US Department of Commerce (SF Office) joined efforts to remove some of the barriers to international trade facing small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Bay Area. The program, appropriately named Creating Export Opportunities (CEO) specifically targets women, handicapped, minority entrepreneurs, as well as, the main stream SMEs. The Program component includes: seminars, workshops, one-on-one consulting, network events and other CITD resources/events. The CEO, led by Richard Soyombo, Director, Skyline College CITD, is a two-level program, Level I specifically addresses the challenges of new companies while Level II targets and addresses the needs of companies with a minimum of 2-year exposure/experience in international trade.
Draft College Council agenda for November 16:
1. Accreditation update and invitation to serve on self-study teams: The Co-Chairs of the Accreditation Steering Committee will provide an update.
2. Skyline Shines Awards: At the last meeting, the Council approved a proposal for the creation of new "Skyline Shines Awards" which would recognize two people each year, a Skyline employee and a community member who in some important way help "Skyline shine." The Council will discuss the draft criteria and the timeline for this year.
3. Colleges Thematic Governance Model and committee meeting schedule: Review of the current governance model and the current meeting schedule and discussion of ways to get our governance work done while minimizing duplication of effort.
