Skyline Shines
September 16, 2005
Hurricane Katrina relief planning: A group of students, faculty and staff who are working on fundraising and led by ASCC Vice President Peter Monrroy, will meet again on Wednesday in Room 2305 at 2 pm. The planning group includes people involved in a number of related efforts, including a blood drive and other fundraising approaches. Many clubs are involved. The meeting will involve refining plans for a New Orleans style barbecue and concert tentatively scheduled for November 2. The event will include both midday and evening components so that day and evening students, faculty and staff can participate. The discussion on Wednesday will include how best to route the funds raised; a variety of options are being discussed. Statewide, California community college efforts are being posted on the state chancellors office website at http://www.cccco.edu See the Hurricane Katrina Updates button there. Once the Skyline plans are firm, I will post ours there as well. If you are involved in a Skyline group that would like to connect with the Skyline planning group, please join us next Wednesday. If Gerry Peel or I can help with publicizing any activities you are planning, please dont hesitate to contact us.
Constitution Day: Recent federal legislation requires that every educational institution that receives federal funds hold an educational program on the United States Constitution in recognition of Constitution and Citizenship Day on September 17 or within 2 weeks of that date if it falls on a weekend. Details are not specified in the law. I have asked Donna Bestock to take the lead, working with faculty, on how we will comply with this legislation in a way that is educationally productive for our students. This year September 17 falls on a Saturday, so we will hold events the following Friday, September 23. Jim Wong will give a lecture on the Constitution as part of his History 240 class on Friday, 9/23 at 10:10 in 2306. The campus will be invited. The title of his presentation will be The Constitution: Justice and Justices. The library is putting up a display that will be up all of next week. We will have 2 tables, one in the library and one in the cafeteria, where students will be able to pick up a free copy of the constitution and another booklet called "How Laws Are Made." These were provided by Congressman Tom Lantos. The district has provided a website with helpful links. Plans for future years include adding to the website to make it a learning resource to support student projects; developing curriculum designed to supplement courses that meet the AH&I requirement, adding a unit for a constitution project; integrating this into other courses as well; and continuing with the library display and the handouts.
Degree Audit: Faculty and Staff at all three colleges and the district have been working for several years on a Degree Audit process that will allow students to monitor their progress toward their educational goals using WebSMART from campus or the internet. By Spring 2005 all three academic senates had accepted the 37 recommendations from the Degree Audit Steering Committee. All three colleges are busy implementing the recommendations but one outlying issue was yet to be resolved depending upon the ability of the Degree Audit technology to accurately depict courses from other institutions on student transcripts. The committee received good news this week when they learned that ITS has recently been able to make a modification to the WebSMART based compliance report to show the transfer institution, subject, course number and grade of incoming work. The Steering Committee will meet in the near future to finalize the outstanding recommendation in the context of this news. Obviously this will be a tremendously valuable tool for students. Many thanks go out to Frank Vaskelis, Eric Raznick, Jeanne Hyde and the entire steering committee for a job well done.
Skyline Art Faculty Show: You dont want to miss it. Gerry sent out the days and hours earlier this week. By the way, we have a new banner directing people to the Gallery Theater. Thanks to Kenny Gonzalez for making the arrangements and to Richard Inokuchi and the facilities staff for hanging it.
