group picOpening Day group photo: What a beautiful group of people! I am attaching an electronic version of the group photo we took on Opening Day. If you would like a hard copy, simply email Roxanne Brewer at brewer@smccd.net. We will get another group photo taken next fall, and smooth out the process wrinkles. But none of that seemed to get in the way of all of those dynamite smiles.

New people at Skyline: Please join me in welcoming a new member of our staff:

á Lucas Borgo was hired as an Instructional Aide II in PE replacing Kevin Corsiglia (now full-time faculty member in Physical Education, and women’s soccer coach).

Faculty Art Show in the Gallery Theater: Skyline College is blessed with an art faculty which represents a range of approaches and tremendous talent. You can see that for yourself in the Gallery Theater at the Faculty Art Show which begins this Monday, September 12, and runs through October 14. Come to the reception for the artists this Wednesday, September 14 from 6:30 to 8 pm in the Gallery Theater.

Screening of Brothers: There will be a screening of the new film, Brothers, on Sept. 28th from 1-2 pm in the Main Theater. The project was funded by the President’s Innovation Fund in 2004-05. It is a 52 minute documentary exploring the interpersonal dynamics of brothers and their societal influence. First time director Fermin Irigoyen, Speech faculty member at Skyline, uses his relationship with his brother as a base for studying brotherly relationships by using sets of featured brothers ranging from ages 20-50. Irigoyen addresses topics such as how each of the brothers perceive each other and what leads to those perceptions, verbal/ nonverbal communication between brothers, conflict resolution and numerous appealing childhood stories that shaped these guys to the men they are today. Irigoyen believes that Brothers provides an opportunity for reflection upon relationships among siblings and understanding of individual interpersonal dynamics.

Hurricane Katrina:

Fundraising: The first meeting of a planning group for fundraising efforts took place last Wednesday, led by Peter Monrroy, ASSC Vice President. The group reviewed a rich array of ideas, and we will meet again on September 14 at 2 pm. If you want to be on the email list for this and future meetings, let Peter know at petermonrroy@yahoo.com.

Dislocated students: As you know from my message last week, we are seeking to do anything we can to accommodate dislocated students. If you hear of any who might want to attend Skyline, please direct them to Sherri Hancock. At the state level, there is a bill under consideration in the legislature which would make dislocated students eligible for resident, instead of nonresident, enrollment fees.
