President's Updates
Skyline Shines

June 23, 2005

Best wishes to all of you who are involved in our summer session, which began this week. And I hope everyone who is away is enjoying their change of scene. I will send out Skyline Shines less frequently during the summer. Here is the first summer edition.

Executive Report to the Board of Trustees: here is the link to my latest report to the Board of Trustees: http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skynotes/boardrpt/index.html

New full-time faculty at Skyline: In my May 20 Skyline Shines, I announced the appointment by the Board of Trustees of two new faculty–Kevin Corsiglia, Physical Education and Women’s Soccer Coach; and Liza Erpelo, English. Let me now add to that list of names the following people who were appointed by the Board last night:

Please join me in welcoming them to our full-time faculty.

New Vice President for Student Services: Please join me in welcoming Dr. Loretta Adrian, appointed last night by the Board as our our new Vice President for Student Services. She will begin in early August.

Board approves quote for Student Center: Last night the Board approved my recommendation in favor of the following quotation for the exterior wall of the new Student Center; this was the quotation which scored the highest in our online vote in late May:

You must be the change you want to see in the world. Mahatma Ghandi

Thanks again to everyone who helped bring this project to fruition.

Skyline Students named All-Americans: In late May, three Skyline baseball student-athletes were voted All-Americans:

• Chris Dubon

• Eric Mull

• Dan Hernandez

For a student to be voted an All-American means that he or she is one of the top players in the country. The voting is conducted by the coaches in the state of California (California Community College Baseball Coaches Association or CCCBCA). These players are then placed in the pool of other players from throughout the nation and become "All-Americans". It is quite rare for an institution to have three winners from one team, and it is quite an honor. In addition, Eric Mull was voted Rawlings Big Stick Award winner, which is given to the top hitter in California, the second year in a row for one of our student-athletes to win this honor.

1906 earthquake commemoration: One of the President’s Innovation Fund projects for the forthcoming year, led by Mel Zucker, will involve Skyline College in an extensive regional commemoration of the 1906 earthquake on the nearby San Andreas Fault and the related fires in San Francisco. The commemoration will include the development and installation of a permanent informational plaque for the campus and a guest speaker. That speaker will be James Dalessandro, author of 1906 — A Novel. He will come to Skyline on Tuesday October 4th at 1:00 pm in the Main Theatre for a lecture and book signing. Not only is Mr. Dalessandro an expert in earthquake preparedness, he is a screenwriter as well. He will show an 18 minute video. Check out San Francisco Magazine for his latest articles at http://www.sanfranmag.com/archives/search_results/James Dalessandro/

Skyline faculty member earns doctorate: In February 2005, Genie Dvorak, counselor, was awarded her doctoral degree in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco. Her research examined how children are affected by traumatic experiences and the way in which these impact developmental processes through adolescence and adulthood. Dr. Dvorak maintains a private practice in San Francisco and she trained at St. Mary's Medical Center-McAuley Institute where she was Chief Psychology Intern.

Snitovsky’s Marine Mammal Honors course: If you want to learn a bit about marine mammals from Shari Snitovsky’s students, check out the website at http://smccd.net/accounts/snitovsky/bio675/bio675.html You can see a sample of the research they completed, the educational outreach program they did, and a poem on manatees, which is really thinking "outside the box". The Funtastic Whales program was offered both at Expanding Your Horizons and at the Pacifica Library, where the community was invited to experience the program.

A personal note: I was just named president-elect of the San Bruno Rotary
