Skyline Shines

May 5, 2006

Accreditation: Skyline faculty, staff, administrators and students have been hard at work on a first draft of our accreditation self-study. In typical Skyline fashion, a celebration is being held today to recognize the completion of this key first phase of the work. Please join us in the quad between Buildings 7and 8 today between 12:30 and 1:30 for a picnic and a party.

Run, don’t walk, to tonight’s Dance Concert: Last night I experienced Skyline’s 20th Dance Concert and I found myself smiling through the entire performance. This event is an opportunity to see Diana Cushway’s last production, a compelling reason on its own. In addition, you will see amazing student work in terms of both performance and choreography. The pieces are quite varied, beautiful, funny, and surprising–it is all there! It will be at 7 pm tonight in the Main Theater.

Educational and Facilities Master Plan (EFMP) Project: This afternoon our EFMP Task Force will hear Steinberg Architects present a couple of different approaches that might be taken to Skyline facilities in our new Facilities Master Plan. The architects have been meeting with people at the college, studying our facilities and examining our Draft Education Master Plan, and their presentation will reflect that research. Consistent with the process identified at the Campus-Wide Forum on April 6, 2006, the college as a whole will have a chance to provide input to their draft next Thursday, May 11, at 1 pm in Room 2306. (You received a flyer in your mailbox about this.) In a similar format to the previous Forum, there will be a presentation, followed by a discussion. Steinberg Architects will present two Options for the 2006 Facilities Master Plan at Skyline College.  Your feedback will be incorporated such that these Options will ultimately evolve into the Recommended 2006 Facilities Master Plan.  These Options will be presented at the May Board meeting.

Skyline wins federal grant for Asian Studies project: Thanks to the efforts of Hui Pate, professor of Business, we have received notification from the DOE that Skyline College’s grant proposal entitled "Building Bridges for Asian Studies: Language, Commerce and Cultures Program" has been selected for funding for the Title VIA Grant Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign language (UISFL) program.

Skyline College Receives $450,000 to Strengthen Biotechnology Education Links Between High Schools, Regional Occupation Programs, and Community Colleges: We learned this week that Skyline College will be awarded $450,000 to support Biotechnology Career Education in the Bay Area. The California Community College Chancellor’s Office selected the college to lead this project. The funding supports improved linkages between the career and technical curricula of the public schools and community colleges. Skyline College will lead a consortium called BIOMAPS, (Biotechnology Instruction Organizations Map Articulated Pathways for Success). The BIOMAPS consortium includes: Gene Connection, Capuchino High School, Career Ladders Project, San Mateo High School, Carlmont High School, San Mateo County Regional Occupation Program (ROP), BayBIO Institute, Northern California Biotechnology Center, Bio-Link, Cañada College, College of San Mateo, Laney College, and Skyline College.
