President's Updates
  Skyline Shines

April 28, 2006

Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN):  The second annual PCN was truly spectacular--well over 50 students, faculty, and staff members participating! Students were involved in a musical production which they wrote and performed, with the guidance of their professor, Liza Erpelo, counselors Nate Nevado and Jeff Acidera, and staff members Romeo Garcia and Erwin Javellana.  The production was entitled "Roundtrip: Balik Sambayanan" and explores the experiences of two young people–one Filipino-American eager to see the Phillipines and explore his roots there, and one Filipino eager to see the United States and escape her home country. Their stories intersect, and mirror each other in a rich and fascinating way. The evening concluded with recognition of 15 students who will be transferring in the fall.

Skyline’s Phi Theta Kappa students shine:  Our Phi Theta Kappans just returned from the International Convention. There are 1600 Phi Theta Kappa chapters at community colleges in several countries. Most of the chapters are in the United States. During the academic year, chapters develop and implement programs in Leadership, Scholarship, and Service. Skyline's chapter, Beta Theta Omicron, received the Leadership and Scholarship Hallmark Awards for 2006 and was recognized as a  distinguished Chapter. Only 25 chapters can receive these awards. Please congratulate chapter members and officers. Pictured here are officers Lacey Slattery, President (Pacifica). Angela Rayfield, V-P Scholarship (South San Francisco). Nasim Naderseresht, President-elect (San Francisco). Emi Matsuura, V-P Operation (South San Francisco). Winny Pratiwi. V-P Communications (Daly City).

Fresh Look Project and logo redesign update: A revised approach to the logo redesign is being developed and will be considered by the Fresh Look Advisory Group on May 8. I have been talking with faculty, staff and students in various venues about what they do and do not like about our current logo and the proposals for the new logo. I take that input very seriously, I have discussed it with the College Council and that input has informed the proposal for a revised approach that will go to the May 8 meeting of the Fresh Look Advisory Group. I believe that we will be able to bring this redesign process to a good conclusion. Thanks to everyone who has participated so far. More to come!

College Council update:

  1. Educational and Facilities Master Planning (EFMP) Project update:  The Council reviewed plans for the Town Hall Forums on April 26 (Draft Education Master Plan) and May 11 (Draft Facilities Master Plan). (The Town Hall Forum on the Draft Education Master Plan on Thursday was well attended and discussion was lively and valuable.) The Draft Education Master Plan is available on the website at EFMPP and additional ideas and comments are welcome. Please submit them to Cathy Hasson.

  2. Board approval of mission statement: One of our accreditation writing committees, Standard I (Institutional Mission and Effectiveness), in the course of their work on our self-study, noticed a couple of issues with our current Mission statement: it is no longer current, and it needs to be approved by the Board. The process for updating the mission statement was discussed and was referred to the Institutional Planning Committee to work out the details of the timeline and process and bring a recommendation back to the Council. Our hope is to complete our work during the fall in order to synchronize the new mission statement with our planning cycle.

  3. Fresh Look Project update:  The Council reviewed the report on the recent focus groups on the logo. Concerns were expressed about the process so far and about the logo options. After discussion it was concluded that although the process followed was consistent with what had been planned and published, some members of the college would like more input to the logo design. Options for how to proceed from here were considered. The Fresh Look Advisory Group will meet May 8 to consider the results of the focus groups and the options for next steps.

  4. Budget update:  The Council reviewed the process and timeline for development of the 2006-07 budget for the college.

  5. ASSC election update: The Council discussed efforts to recruit students for ASSC roles for 2006-07.

  6. Leadership Retreat next fall:  Plans were made for another leadership retreat next fall to include the Management Council and the College Council.

  7. Skyline Shines Award:  The Council will hold a special meeting to screen the nominees for this award. The award will be made at Opening Day on August 16.
