Town Hall Forum: Delivery of 2006 DRAFT Education Master Plan
Thursday, April 27, 2006 from 12:45-2:45 in room 2306
Please join with your
colleagues to hear the recommendations made to the College as a result of the
Education Plan process. The facilitator for Skyline's plan, Dr. Rick Voorhees,
will discuss the College's future based on the findings from the work that has
been done to date. The audience will be invited to share their thoughts
and suggestions as the College moves forward with the Education Plan to provide
direction for the Facility Master Plan. Please attend and bring a colleague.
The Draft Educational Master Plan is available on our website for your review
at this web address: EFMPP.
The draft makes recommendations about the future of the college and our programs
and services and your thoughts and advice about those is vital to our decision
making process. For the recommendations, see pages 64-70. Here is what
you will find in the draft report:
Potential new programs are suggested.
Ideas are provided for ways that the college can better serve our surrounding communities.
Recommendations are made for "success factors"--how we will be able to know whether we are succeeding in our efforts.
The detailed research that has been going on and which provide the foundation for the recommendations is provided.
Following the Forum next week and the subsequent meeting of the EFMP Task Force, the draft will be revised, so the time for your input is now. Thanks!
Newly tenured Skyline faculty: On Wednesday night, the Board approved
the following Skyline faculty for tenure: Alec Bates, Lynne Douglas, Jonathan
Freedman, Valerie Goines, Judith Heldberg, Evan Leach, Jude Navari and Dino
Nomicos. All of these people are already making wonderful contributions to the
college as a whole as well as to their students and their disciplines. Please
join me in congratulating them.
Skylines Cosmetology program shines: The college experienced a surprise visit from the Board of Barbering & Cosmetology recently. That is the state agency which governs our activities as they relate to students in the cosmetology program. It appears that our program passed the inspection with flying colors. The inspector found our facility "clean, uncluttered and with no safety violations." She cited how impressed she was by how well managed our students seemed to be with ongoing classes in progress all over the department. She commented more than once on the "professional atmosphere" of our department. Thanks to our Cosmetology faculty and staff for helping Skyline Cosmetology to shine.
Skyline automotive student wins foundation scholarship:
Julia
Johnson, Skyline automotive student and president of the Auto Club for the past
year, has been awarded a scholarship from The Automotive Service Councils of
California Educational Foundation (ASCEF). Ms. Johnson was one of the three
women and two men selected. This year, dozens of high school and college applicants
were scored on their automotive grades as well as their general class grades,
dedication to their training and their career path, and participation in the
automotive field inside and outside of the classroom, as well as community service.
Scholarship winners were awarded a scholarship worth $600 each, to help them
pay for their training. Founded in 2000, the Automotive Service Councils of
California Educational Foundation is dedicated to serving the automotive repair
industry by providing scholarships to students in the Automotive Repair Career
field. The Foundations activities directly impact and influence
the advancement of professionalism within the Automotive Repair Industry and
the attitudes of society.
Skyline MESA students selected for summer internships: Silvia Gonzalez, Nasim Naderseresht and Eliezer Concepcion, students in the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) program at Skyline were selected for summer internship programs. Chemistry student Silvia Gonzalez was selected for a paid summer internship with the Center for Polymer Interfaces and Molecule Assemblies (CPIMA) at Stanford. CPIMA provides undergraduate research experiences and promotes science education and awareness of materials science, with a special emphasis on polymers. She competed with students from all over the country and she was the only community college student selected. Computer engineering student Nasim Naderseresht was selected for a paid summer internship with the Center for Adaptive Optics at UC Berkeley. Adaptive optics is a method to sharpen the images produced by optical systems such as telescopes, cameras and the human eye by removing the distortions that blur these images. She will also receive a sponsorship to present her research at a national scientific conference. Biochemistry student Eliezer Concepción is the 2006 Genentech scholar from Skyline. He will be conducting research at Genentech and will receive a $7500 stipend.
Skyline faculty member to be inducted into San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame: Terry Chrisman, former member of the Skyline Physical Education faculty, was selected for induction into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame this June. He was inducted into the Daly City Sports Hall of Fame last year for his accomplishments as both an athlete and coach. At Skyline, he coached baseball for 14 years and also built up the golf program. He has taught almost every activity class we offer.
Skyline faculty member publishes first novel: Congratulations to English professor, Kathleen de Azevedo Feinblum, on the publication of her novel, Samba Dreamers, by The University of Arizona Press. It is available in our Bookstore. You can also find more information on Kathleens website at www.kathleenazevedo.com
Facilities staff shines up Skyline over the spring break: Please join me in thanking the Facilities staff for the numerous and important projects they completed on our behalf over the spring break. There were too many jobs to list here, but they included cleaning and waxing hallways in Buildings 1, 2, 5 and 7; scrubbing and cleaning all restroom floors; cleaning and waxing the Cafeteria floor; cleaning carpets in the portable classrooms, Childcare Center and the One Stop; grooming the athletic fields and washing the tennis courts; repairing potholes on the Loop Road and Staff lot 1 and the Pacific Heights student lot; installing many trash containers; making repairs to the fixed seating in Room 2306; a number of administrative tracking activities to help make this happen; and, of course, continuing to support the ongoing construction projects. When you see these people, please let them know how much you appreciate these efforts.
