President's Updates
Skyline Shines
April 7, 2006
Student leadership: Think for a moment about one Skyline student you know who has leadership potential--someone who could both contribute to and benefit from involvement in the Associated Students of Skyline College (ASSC).
Email that name to Amory Cariadus, or phone her at 738-4334 to give her the name.
She will then contact that person to explain what this opportunity would involve and how to put their name in nomination for an ASSC office. I care deeply about this for a couple of reasons: ASSC is an unparalleled learning opportunity for student, and having student leadership involved in the College Council and other key college bodies is vital to the health of the college and the quality of our decisions. Thanks for your help with identifying promising students.
Presidents Innovation Fund proposal deadline for 2006-07 projects: At the recent Presidents Breakfast I was pleased to introduce this years Presidents Innovation Fund recipients, as well as highlight some of this years wonderful projects during the program. Now it is time for brainstorming about next years projects. The deadline for Presidents Innovation Fund proposals is April 28th, due in my office by 4:30 that day. The proposal guidelines and the form are available on our website at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skypio/pif/index.html.
Educational and Facilities Master Planning (EFMP) update: The last two weeks have included two campus wide forumsone with our educational planning consultant and one with our facilities planning architects. There have also been a strategy session and a meeting of the EFMP Task Force. All of the session materialsPowerPoint presentations and handoutsare available on our EFMP website at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skypro/home.html. You can also get there through the alphabetical listing on the front page, under Planning. The membership of our large EFMP Task Force is provided there, along with the timeline for these projects. There will be two more Town Hall Forums within the next month:
April 27, 1:00-3:00 pm, Room 2306: Town Hall Forum, presentation of the draft Educational Master Plan
May 11, 1:00-3:00 pm, Room 2306: Town Hall Forum, presentation of preferred options for the Facilities Master Plan
In addition, we will have the draft Educational Master Plan available online starting the week of April 17 and will be inviting feedback on it in advance of the Town Hall Forum. Expect an email from Cathy Hasson about that.

the
efforts of Linda Rosa Corazon and the Presidents Innovation Fund. The

for nominations, instructional and counseling faculty made nominations and then
the Transfer Advisory Council reviewed and approved the. Inducted this year
were these individuals:
Mark Simon
Dolores Victor
Gracie Hough
Hellen Zhang
Andy Davis
Violeta Borjas
Vu Tran
This years inductees were included many immigrants and first-generation college students, they were actively involved in Student Support Services such as EOPS, DSPS, and MESA, and they are actively involved in giving back to their community. Hellen Zhang and Andy Davis are mother and son and are now adjunct faculty at Skyline (in Business and Biology, respectively). You can see photos and bios of the awardees for last year on the Transfer Center website: http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skyline/sts/tc.html This years awardees will be posted there soon as well.
Career Expo at Skyline: Skyline Colleges Career Expo 2006, hosted by our Career Center on April 5th at the Skyline College Cafeteria was a huge success! More than 38 companies and 76 employer representatives attended this event to recruit students for available part-time and full-time employment openings. Five hundred students and community participants took advantage of the opportunity to gain valuable information and to become more familiar with existing employment and training opportunities throughout the Bay Area.
Successful
GEPP event: On Saturday, April 1, Skyline hosted another group of graduating
seniors participating in our Guaranteed Enrollment Priority Program (GEPP).
A record number of seniors from our feeder highs, 219 in all, attended the day
long event. During the full day program, they completed placement testing, orientation,
went on a tour (just as the sun started to shine) and scheduled counseling appointments.
Nearly 40 parents attended the parent orientation sessions that were conducted
in the morning, in both English and Spanish. Given the success of the event,
but knowing that there are still seniors we have not yet reached, we may offer
a third GEPP session in early May. And, the GEPP session for students with disabilities
will be held Friday and Saturday, April 28 and 29. Thanks to the following people
for this terrific event: Sylvia Martinez and Cass Christian from A&R, Chris
Weidman, Sheila Claxton, testing proctors Linda Kisich and Mandy Liang, Angelica
Gorostiza, Ivy Velasquez, Dennis Tordesillas, Donna Elliott, Linda Van Sciver
for the student and parent orientation, Lou Ferguson for student orientation,
Pablo Gonzalez for the parent orientation in Spanish, Kenny Gonzalez and the
Campus Ambassadors and Student Workers: Daniel Tostado, Stephanie Nale, Brenda
Valencia, Melody Pilotte, Dan Radovich, Elizabeth Osai, Jasn Jay, Nadia; and
Jennifer Hughes.
Fresh Look Project update and logo redesign: As you know, we are in the process of redesigning our Skyline logo, and that has included work by the Fresh Look Advisory Group, and then a series of focus groups for faculty, staff, students and members of the community which were held last week. Thanks to all of you who took time out to participate in focus groups and provide your input. The report on that research will be discussed by the Fresh Look Advisory Group at a meeting later this month. I will keep you posted on this project.
Skyline Biology professor publishes two textbooks: Two new editions of textbooks co-authored by Christine Case have recently been published: Microbiology: An Introduction, Ninth Edition and Laboratory Experiments in Microbiology, Eighth Edition. Please join me in congratulating her.
