President's Updates
Skyline Shines

February 24, 2006

Death of a Skyline student:   I am sorry to announce that Freddy Orellana passed away on Feb. 14, 2006.  He was a student in Skyline’s Automotive Technology program, in the A T-TEN classes and had successfully completed air-conditioning, brakes, chassis, engine repair, transmission, basic electrical, and advanced electrical.  This was to be his last semester and he would have graduated in May 2006.  According to the faculty, Freddy was a hard working guy who never gave up on a problem.  He was very motivated in pursuing a career in the automotive field.  Freddy also had a part time job working as a waiter in a restaurant so he could help out with the family’s financial needs.  He will be missed by the faculty, staff and students who knew him.  Freddy was a graduate of George Washington High School in San Francisco.

President’s Breakfast:  The annual President’s Breakfast will take place on March 23.  It is a vital activity in terms of building understanding of the mission and values of the college and generating support for our President’s Innovation Fund.  The event will be at 7:30 am at the South San Francisco Conference Center, 255 South Airport Blvd.  If you would like to attend, please or email Roxanne Brewer at brewer@smccd.edu or 650-738-4325.

Accreditation Self-Study training:  Please join me in thanking Ray Hernandez and Donna Bestock and the other members of the Accreditation Steering Team.  They are doing a tremendous job of leading the self-study effort and conducted two training sessions last week for people serving on the four self-study teams.

Pacifica Sports Hall of Fame:  Andreas Wolf will be the Master of Ceremonies at the annual Pacifica Sports Hall of Fame Dinner to be held on February 25th, 2006 at the Grosvenor Hotel in SSF. Two former community college athletes, one from Skyline (Doug Hupke) and the other from CSM (Doreen Gutierrez) will be inducted with two other former Pacifica athletes.

"Shaping our Future": educational and facilities master planning update:  We are off and running.  Our educational planning consultant, Rick Voorhees, held numerous interviews and this week and conducted the first "strategy sessions" with the Institutional Planning Committee, the College Council, and a subgroup of our EFMP Task Force (Educational and Facilities Master Planning), along with some students and community members.  He shared a draft of his external environmental scan and some draft "planning assumptions."  Cathy Hasson, our Director of Planning, Research and Institutional Effectiveness, will be providing those for everyone’s information and input via email shortly and she will also be posting this material on her website.  Also out there will be the detailed schedule for all of this planning work.  Here are a couple of key dates that you will see there which you may want to calendar:

In addition, various draft materials related to these projects will be provided on our website with opportunities for electronic feedback along the way.  Thanks to everyone who is participating in this various important work.
