President's Updates
Skyline Shines
February 3, 2006
Welcome to the new Interim Dean of Language Arts: Please join me in welcoming Connie Beringer as the Interim Dean of Language Arts, beginning on Monday, February 6.
Skyline shines in the "Speak Out on Racism" forum: Many students and staff shared a truly memorable experience in the forum on racism this Wednesday afternoon. It was held in conjunction with the showing of the movie "Crash" last week, which was facilitated by Professor Phyllis Taylor. The ASSC, led by Taylor Angel, arranged the forum event, and we owe him thanks for it, along with Professor George Wright who introduced Dr. Tommie Smith, the keynote speaker. Thanks also to the fascinating and informative panelists: Lori Adrian, Rachel Bell, Masao Suzuki, James Wong, and Daniel Tostado and Sarah Figuero.
Update on Educational and Facilities Master Planning: Invitations to participate in the Educational and Facilities Master Planning (EFMP) Task Force that I mentioned last Friday have gone out to all of the groups and the work will begin very soon. As I noted, there will be a variety of ways to impact the decisions the college ultimately makes about our facilities projects, including not only this Task Force, but also open forums, and the colleges existing program review and planning materials will also be critical to the process.
Art on Campus Committee: As I mentioned last week in Skyline Shines, we are now ready to form a new standing committee for Art on Campus. Thanks again to those who served on our Art on Campus Task Force and did such a great job for us on this important project: Donna Bestock and Bridget Fischer, co-chairs; Doria Bernard; Melchie Cabrigas; Kathy Fitzpatrick; Richard Inokuchi; Linda Kisich; Judy Lariviere; Sue Lorenzo; Julene Rhoan; and Arthur Takayama. The guidelines the Task Force developed are available now on our website at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skynotes/. The membership of the new standing committee will be consistent with that recommended by the Art on Campus Task Force and all of those who participated in the Task Force will be invited to continue, along with a few additional members to round it out. The Board of Trustees will hear a report on their work at the February 15 board meeting, where all three colleges will be describing their Art on Campus work.
Skyline Shines Awards: The Call for Nominations for the Skyline Shines Awards will go out later today, including the criteria for the awards and the deadline of April 3 for nominations. The Call for Nominations will also be posted on our website at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skynotes/.
