I know that many of you are deep in the process of reviewing student work, finalizing grades, engaging in end of term activities and thinking ahead to a bit of a breather. This is just a quick update.
Board of Trustees
I attended my first meeting of the Board of Trustees Wednesday night and had the opportunity to tell them a bit about all the ways in which Skyline shines. Thanks to all of you who have been sending me information about our students, faculty, programs, events and partnerships.
New Faculty Positions
I also want to say thanks to the members of the FTE Allocation Committee, the Academic Senate and the College Budget Committee for the work you have done in recent months to bring to closure the recommendations concerning new faculty positions. As many of you know, I received and concurred in the Senate’s recommendations about the ranking of the needed new faculty positions. The Budget Committee recommended that we proceed to hire eight new faculty for next fall and I have concurred in that recommendation as well. We have the go-ahead from the Chancellor for that number, and so the rewarding work of recruiting and screening candidates will begin right away.
Recognition of a Skyline Faculty Member
Recently I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Linda Whitten, Skyline Professor of Accounting, do a great job of briefing the College Budget Committee on some district wide budget work on an allocation model. Today I learned that she presented a paper at the 12th Annual Conference of American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences (ASBBS). This paper was selected as the Best Paper of Track. The anonymous reviewers commended Professor Whitten for her original research and contributions to the body of knowledge. She will be recognized for this outstanding achievement at the Annual Banquet of ASBBS on Saturday, February 26, 2005. Congratulations to Linda!
Skyline’s 35th Anniversary
Preparations for the college’s 35th anniversary are under way. The celebration will take place on Thursday, April 28, beginning at noon, with events running into the evening. Details about the plans are beginning to take shape, and you will be getting an invitation from the planning group to share any particular ideas you may have about additional ways we might want to mark the occasion. I am attaching the 35th anniversary logo which we will be using widely during 2005.
Best Wishes
I feel as though I have received the best holiday gift ever in the form of getting to join you here at Skyline College. I wish you the best for the holidays and the New Year, and I look forward to seeing you all back here in January.
