Update on the Building 6 quotation selection process: The response to the invitation to submit proposed inspirational quotations for the new Student Center was tremendous--we received 86 proposed quotations. The College Council has identified a short list of candidates, and we are in the process now of background work on that list. For the moment, though, I would like to thank all of the people who submitted proposals: Mazouza Assaf, Rosemary Bell, Don Biederman, Peter Bruni, Christine Case, Raul Ceballos, Carlos Colombetti, E.C. Concepcion, Norman del Prado, Maureen Delema, Linda Dieterle, Suzan Duffey, Adam Duran, Ann Faherty, Stanlee Garriott, Linda Ghio, Paul Goodman, Christine Marie Hendricks, Valerie Higgins, Richard Inokuchi, Jeanne Jacobs, Pamela Jeffrey, Rosa Larios, Charles Lee, Carolyn Livengood, Frank Markovich, Melissa Mascarinas, Bonnie Okonek, Celina Pritchard, April Quok, Shellie Raygoza, Justine Silva, Margie Talavera, Brenda Valencia, Evette Weiler, Jeff Westfall, and Lavinia Zanassi.
The process from here on out looks like this:
-
The librarians will verify the source and exact wording of the short list and identify any issues relative to the author or context of the quotation and report on any issues to me. If necessary, I will consult further with the College Council.
-
The short list will be submitted to a college-wide vote, to include faculty, staff, and students. Voting will be web-based and will take place on May 23-25 (Monday-Wednesday of Finals Week). The voting will be in the form of an “instant runoff” so you will be invited to rank your votes on more than one proposal. Thanks to Chris Case who is preparing the web-based voting approach.
-
The Board of Trustees will approve the final selection.
Skyline faculty member shines: Congratulations to Stephen Hearne, Psychology faculty member, who has recently published two books. The first is called The Best Test Preparation for the California High School Exit Exam - Math. As you know in California, starting with the class of 2006, all public high school students are required to pass an exit exam in both math and English in order to receive a high school diploma. The second book is called Basic Math Refresher. It is in intended to help people brush up on their basic math skills. Research and Education Association (REA), in Piscataway, New Jersey publishes both books.
Picnic benches at the Founders Learning Grove of Trees: The picnic benches are here! They have been installed between the tennis courts and the loop road, next to the Founders Learning Grove of Trees. Enjoy them!
