President's Updates

April 29, 2005

35th Anniversary Celebration:  What a day!  We enjoyed beautiful weather for the inauguration of our new Sports Complex.  And along with it a happy crowd, good food, an inspiring inauguration of the Learning Grove of Tree, and performances from our Filipino students in music, dance and martial arts. Thanks to this wonderful group of planners and executors who brought us the tremendous celebration we enjoyed yesterday:  Co-chairs Nick Kapp and Tiffany Reardon, Sandy Irber, Jerry Peel, Roxanne Brewer, Richard Inokuchi, Linda Ghio, Félix Pérez, Andreas Wolf, Liza Erpelo, Len Herzstein, Jim Wyatt, Gus Petropoulos, Ilka Barcala (ASSC), Melchie Cabrigas (ASSC), Joseph Cabaltica (FSU), Nikki Santiago (FSU), Gabby Au (Cheerleading). And then at the end of the day there was the student art exhibit organized by Bridget Fischer and Arthur Takayama—60 pieces of work in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography and more.  The exhibit will be up for a couple of weeks; watch for a message from Jerry Peel about the exact dates and times.

Executive Report to the Board of Trustees:  By Monday, you will be able to see the report on Skyline that I gave to the Board of Trustees this week by going to this link on our website (through Faculty and Staff Resources):  http://www.smccd.net/accounts/skynotes/ .

High winds and great people:  On April 22, there was a major wind storm at Skyline which lifted and blew away large sheets of plastic that had been laid over our synthetic turf soccer field to protect it during the resurfacing spraying.  Please join me in thanking the following folks who literally ‘tackled’ the large sheets of plastic, cut and tore it from whatever it got hung up on, and saw to it that it got secured and disposed:  Richard Inokuchi (Facilities), Tony Gulli (Facilities), Bob Spacher (Facilities), Diego Zarco (Facilities), Sheikh Hussain (Facilities), Hamand Bali (Facilities), Dave McCargar (Facilities), Jim Herndon (Security), Zak Conway (Swinerton), Bernard Rottner (Swinerton), Victor Livingston (Swinerton), Jeff Feeny (Bothman).  It took them all the better part of 3 hours working in extremely gusting winds to contain the plastic sheeting that was blowing furiously in multiple locations.

Campus Signage Task Force:  This new Task Force will work with our design architects Kate Keading and Associates in developing draft Signage Master Plan Standards. The standards are designed to apply to all campus wayfinding signage in the new buildings, those under remodeling and the existing buildings as well, in addition to exterior signage around the campus.  The following individuals will participate in developing a proposal, with their draft then being routed to the College Council:  Kathy Fitzpatrick, Kenny Gonzalez, Jim Herndon, Tom Hewitt, Jennifer Hughes, Richard Inokuchi, Judith Redwine, Richard Tidd, Linda Van Sciver and a student Ambassador.
