April 22, 2005
President’s Breakfast: I have just returned from the annual President’s Breakfast, the event through which the President’s Council raises funds for the President’s Innovation Fund. This year many of our faculty and staff were able to join us, although the Friday morning time makes it a challenge. We had a huge turnout of community supporters, the highest number yet, and an opportunity to recognize the faculty and staff who are responsible for the innovation projects that are being carried out during this year.
The deadline for proposals for projects for next year is April 29, due in my office by 4:30 that day.
I am attaching the guidelines and proposal forms. Each year new ideas come forward—let your secret brainstorm be one of them!
Skyline students recognized at Phi Theta Kappa International Convention: Skyline students have just returned from this convention of 4000 Phi Theta Kappans. Skyline's chapter, Beta Theta Omicron, was in the top 100 chapters and won several international awards. The students worked hard to implement programs in Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. Here are Beta Theta Omicron’s achievements:
-
Won the USA Today Case Study Challenge (for the third consecutive year)
-
Received the Scholarship Hallmark
-
Received the Fellowship Hallmark
-
Outstanding Officer Award, received by Tresca Truong.
The trophies will be added to the display in Bldg 5.
Director of Institutional Planning, Research and Institutional Effectiveness: I am happy to report that we have selected our new Director. Her name is Cathy Hasson and she brings outstanding experience and skills to Skyline College. She served in a similar role for many years at Saddleback College and has had excellent working relationships with all of the college constituencies. She will be joining us full-time in August, but will be on campus from time to time between now and then. We will hold a reception to welcome her once that schedule is mapped out. Thanks to Regina Stanback Stroud and the other members of the Hiring Committee for their excellent work on this key position.
Skyline students perform at the Academic Senate’s statewide session: Thanks to our students and to Dianna Cushway and Liza Erpelo for the excellent job they all did for the Spring Plenary Session of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges. Faculty leaders from across the state were able to learn about excellent Skyline programs and to experience examples of Filipino Dancing and martial arts by the Filipino Student Union and salsa lessons with the student dancers.
