The Skyline View wins more awards: Sixteen students attended the JACC (Journalism Association of Community Colleges) Annual State Convention last weekend in Sacramento. The Skyline View won the award for General Excellence this year for the first time at the state level, competing against all the state community colleges. In addition the students on the staff also won the following:
o For mail-ins:
- Elizabeth Sinclair-Smith won honorable mention for critical review.
- John Harrison won honorable mention for editorial.
- "Staff" won honorable mention for editorial.
o For on-the-spot competitions:
- Vikki Nguyen won third place for feature writing.
- Neill Herbert won honorable mention for copy editing.
- Jenn Livesey won honorable mention for news writing.
For the first time, the convention organizers set up a blog spot, asking students to blog about their convention experience. Four of our students were official bloggers for the convention (out of six total official bloggers): Neill Herbert, John Harrison, Shannon Elliott and Elizabeth Sinclair-Smith. I encourage you to check out our student bloggers at http://jaccsacramento2005.blogspot.com.
Thanks to ASSC for funding these students' trip to the convention.
35th Anniversary of Skyline College: There is a new exhibit up in the big glass display case on the main floor of Building. It celebrates the history of the college and is filled with historical photographs and other items. Thanks to Nick Kapp and Jerry Peel for setting it up. Stop by and take a look into Skyline’s history!
Pilipino Cultural Night May 14: Skyline College’s Filipino Student Union is proud to present Pilipino Cultural Night--an event that expresses the spirit of the Filipino American experience. This popular show, staged at many colleges and universities throughout California, is rarely held at community colleges and we are very fortunate that it will be presented at Skyline on May 14th at 7 pm in the Theater. Pilipino Cultural Night aims to create a greater sense of community between American-born and immigrant Filipino students. The performance showcases the two cultures and features acting, singing, and creative works ranging from traditional Filipino dance, to Western-influenced dance, to modern hip-hop. Pilipino Cultural Night is a collaboration of Skyline’s Language Arts/Learning Resources and Physical Education Divisions and the Kababayan Program. Thanks to Liza Erpelo and Diana Cushway for bringing in Danongan “Danny” Kalanduyan to work with the production. Kalanduyan is both the artistic and executive director of the Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble and internationally-revered master of the Maguidanao Kulintang music of the Southern Philippines. For tickets, please call (650) 738-4274 or visit the website at www.geocities.com/pcn_skylinecollege.
Requesting Facilities Support: Our Facilities staff is in the beta-testing stage of a new work order management system – the “Facilities Help Desk”. The link to the help desk is on the District Portal page at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/portal/. Scroll down the Portal page and on the right side just below the ITS HelpCenter you will find the Facilities HelpCenter box. Or you can find the same link to the help desk on the District Facilities page at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/facilities/. Look to the bottom left side of the page and you will find the Facilities HelpCenter box. We can assist Richard Inokuchi and his staff during this process by using this new web-based help desk system when we submit our service requests. Any and all feedback regarding the system is also welcome during this beta testing stage so that Richard can make ensure the “bugs” get worked out in an effort to deliver a user friendly system that faculty and staff will be comfortable and willing to use.
