President's Updates

April 8, 2005

Museum of Tolerance (MOT):  The MOT 10 group has just returned from our visit to LA, and so we join a group of nearly 200 district employees who have had this tremendous experience. I appreciate more than ever the creativity and energy that have brought so many wonderful MOT events to Skyline and so much good planning on such projects as our Student Equity Plan. I look forward to joining the other alumni in converting what we learned at the MOT into positive action for our students and the college in relation to issues of diversity and of tolerance.

Phi Theta Kappa All California 1st Academic Team:  Yesterday I had the privilege of joining Skyline student Mauricio Gomez at the awards luncheon for him and the other outstanding students who were recognized there.  He was one of just 20 1st Academic Team winners.  Thanks to Chris Case for her leadership in encouraging him and other students to apply for this honor.  The luncheon was sponsored by the Community College League of California and the CSEA.

2004 Waste Diversion Annual Report:  Each State agency and large State facility must submit a report to the California Integrated Waste Management Board by April 1.  This report summarizes Skyline College’s achievement towards meeting the AB75 mandated 50% reduction in sold waste disposed during the 2004 calendar year.  Richard Inokuchi prepares this report and we are happy to report that Skyline College reached a remarkable 74.1% diversion rate.  As a campus, 440 tons of waste was disposed and 326 tons of that waste was diverted from landfills through our concerted recycling efforts.  This is a great accomplishment by the campus at large and our construction contractors and my congratulations go out to all.
