President's Updates

March 24 , 2005

Welcome back from the spring break.  Here are a few updates.

Expanding Your Horizons conference on Saturday, March 19:  Let me say a word about why we do this conference:  we believe in the power of girls—their brains, talents, interests, and their possibilities. And we know that girls can do whatever they want if they have a sense of what those possibilities are and their hopes are high. Those possibilities include careers in mathematics and science. This year over 1000 girls participated. This event is an example of how Skyline shines—the tremendous faculty and staff who work so hard to serve our current and future students well.  Thanks to the people who are responsible for this event:

Facilities crew fights tent in high winds:  These people were here at Skyline in the middle on the night Friday night wrangling the EYH tent.  It had blown down in the high winds, and proceeded to break apart and blow around further.  It took a number of hours of hard work under very trying conditions of wind and rain, but they took care of it.  Please add your thanks to mine when you see any of these people around campus:

Farewell party for Smitty:  As you heard from me in another message, there will be a farewell party for Dr. Donald “Smitty” Smith on Tuesday, March 29, 12-1:30 in the Gallery Theater.  Come wish him well and share his favorites foods—pizza and chocolate cake.  Beginning immediately, his duties will be redistributed as follows:  Anita Martinez, Dean of Language Arts, will assume administrative responsibility for the Learning Center along with Susan Andrien.  Donna Bestock, Dean of Creative Arts and Social Science, will assume administrative responsibility for the Library along with Tom Hewitt.  Also, Susan Andrien will take the lead for supervision of the evening program and will work with the evening nurses who will assist her.  Mike Williamson, Dean of Science, Mathematics and Technology, will assume administrative responsibility for the Center for Advanced Learning Technology.

California Dreamin’?  The State of Education and Health Care:  Come hear this presentation by Scott Shafer of KQED’s The California Report.  He will be at Skyline on Tuesday, April 5, 12 noon.  This event comes to us thanks to Common Ground and the President’s Innovation Fund.  Admission is free.
