That is what I am going to call these updates: Skyline Shines.
Executive Report to the Board of Trustees: I thought some of you might like to see the report I gave to the Board of Trustees Tuesday night. It is available at this address, under a new button called President’s Board Reports: http://skylinecollege.edu/skynotes/
Included with the report were the athletics schedules and the brochures for the WOW! Women on Writing conference and the Expanding Your Horizons conference. Many members of the college assisted in the creation of the report, both in terms of providing items and assisting with the nice graphics. I will be giving such a report to the Board about once a month, so if you have items, be sure to let me know.
Security information: In response to an article in the December 6 Skyline View expressing concerns about security on campus, we have been reviewing our practices and double-checking things. We have learned that Skyline College is in the top five colleges in the Bay area in terms of safety, according to the National Crime Statistics reported as of December, 2004. We are committed to preserving this excellent record. Here is a review of security services provided on campus:
- At least one Security Office staff member is on duty Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to Office staffing, Security Officers are on duty and patrolling the campus throughout the day (including Saturdays) and evening--before, during and after the hours that students are on campus for classes.
- Telephones are located in all classroom buildings on campus. All phones are checked regularly by the Security Office to ensure they are in working condition.
- The Security Office telephone number is clearly posted on the wall above each telephone; it is 4199. The Security cell phone number is also posted in the event callers do not reach a person at 4199. It is 650-678-3705.
- The Security Department offers a service escorting students, faculty and staff to their cars or the Skyline bus stops upon request. Request for an officer escort can be made any time the college is open. To request an officer escort please contact the Security Office at (650) 738-4199 or stop by the Security office in Building 2, Third floor, Room 2319.
- Voice mail is available if the Security Office telephone is not answered after six rings. Staff returns telephone messages with ten minutes after receiving a message.
- Walkie-talkie units and college cell phones are located in all buildings in Division Offices and Department Offices (e.g. Library, Student Services Center). Students and staff should proceed immediately to a department office to report an incident or suspicious activity. Contact is immediate from the department to Security via the walkie-talkies or cell phones. Response time to any contact via telephone or walkie-talkie is generally five minutes or less.
Mike Fitzgerald recognized by the Pacifica Sports Hall of Fame: Mike Fitzgerald will be inducted into the Pacifica Sports Hall of Fame on February 26th at the Grosvenor Hotel in South San Francisco. Mike attended Skyline College and was ranked the number one tennis player in 1976. He has been a faculty member at Skyline for 26 years, has coached softball, cross country and numerous physical education courses within the division. His latest venture includes certification as a Spinning instructor.
Tsunami Relief: Phi Theta Kappa is holding a fundraiser for tsunami relief on February 14, from 8 am-2 pm in the quad between Buildings 1 and 2. The proceeds of the event will go to UNICEF. Please join me in supporting their efforts. We don’t need to eat the candy ourselves; we can feed it to our friends and colleagues.
