The funding supports a regional industry-education collaborative in meeting the growing need for surgical technologists. The San Francisco Bay Area boasts three of the top five highest paying metro areas in the nation for surgical technologists according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Skyline College has the only accredited public surgical technology program in the Bay Area. In order to meet the demand for training, an additional program is needed. This project will partner three Bay Area colleges (Las Positas College, Santa Rosa Junior College and Skyline College) with the region’s healthcare industry to increase surgical technology training opportunities. Industry partners include Valleycare Health System, Kaiser Permanente, and others. Despite great pay, hospitals and surgery centers are struggling to fill openings for surgical technologists. To meet this demand, the project will create an additional accredited surgical technology program at Las Positas College to offer opportunity for more students and employers throughout the Bay Area. Additional training sites include Skyline College and Santa Rosa Junior College. Up to 42 students will have the opportunity to complete requisites for program certificates, receive clinical placements, and qualify for high demand positions throughout the Bay Area Healthcare Industry. Also, an additional 30 surgical technologists already working in the field will receive the training needed to acquire certification which will result in increased pay.
