Skyline defeats Chabot and West Valley to finish 2nd in the Coast Conference

Two big wins over Conference rivals Chabot and West Valley last week put the Skyline wrestling team in 2nd place in the Coast Conference. Skyline defeated Chabot 28-17 with two key pins by Sophmores Sergio Valdez (125) and Matt Schug (285). Just a few days later Skyline came back to defeat West Valley for the 2nd time in a week 24-22. Skyline was led by Joe Buttram (174) who picked up a pin in the 1st round of his match vs Tim Caspray. Also picking up a key win was Jairo Rodriguez (133) who gutted out an 8-7 victory. These 2 big wins put Skyline at 5-6-1 in dual meets.


Valdez and Vance each go 6-0 as Trojans win 3 matches at the Nor Cal Dual Championships.


Sergio Valdez (125) and Kyle Vance (197) each posted 6 wins with 0 loses to lead the Trojans to a 6th place finish at the Northern California Dual Championships this past weekend in Santa Rosa. Skyline defeated Delta 44-8, West Valley 30-18, and Modesto 28-25. The Trojans also put a scare into top ranked Sierra tying the match at 19-19  before eventually dropping the match 19-31. Winning 4 matches on the day was Sophomore Matt Schug (197/285). Picking up 3 key victories on the day was Freshman Kris Swatsbaugh. With his 6 victories Sergio Valdez improves his team leading total to 16.

 

Vance upsets 5th ranked Blair but Trojans fall to Rams

Kyle Vance (197) upset 5th ranked Tyson Blair 4-3 of Fresno City in a Coast Conference Dual meet last night held at Skyline. Vance, who had lost to Blair earlier in the year, scored a key reversal in the 2nd period which proved to be the difference. This was Vance's 7th win of the year. Also picking up his 7th win of the year was Joe Heffelmire (157). Heffelmire scored a 1st period fall over Seth Short with a half nelson pinning combination. Despite these wins Skyline lost in the team battle 42-9 to the 4th ranked Rams of Fresno City. Next up is the Northern California Dual Meet Championships in Santa Rosa on Saturday, October 18th. Wrestling starts @ 9AM.

Schugg Takes 4th Place at Modesto Invitational

Sophomore Matt Schugg (285lb) placed in his first college tournament of the year with a 4th place showing at the Modesto Invitational on Saturday, September 27th. Schugg went 4-2 on the day including a fall. Finishing tied for 5th was Sophomore Sergio Valdez (125lb). Sergio became the first wrestler on the squad to reach double digits in victories this year. He leads the team with a 10-4 mark. The Trojans placed 8th in an 11 team field.

Trojans Fall to West Hills in Dual Meet

Skyline College lost their first dual match of the season against West Hills College of Lemoore on Wednesday, September 24th by a score of 34-12. Sergio Valdez (125lb) won his 7th match of the year and Travis Greggains (141lb) won his 3rd match of the year with a fall in the third period. Next up for Skyline is the Modesto Invitational scheduled for Saturday, September 27th. The Invitational begins at 9A.

Valdez Paces Trojans at Panther Invitational

Sophomore Sergio Valdez (125 lb) paced the Skyline Trojans this past weekend going 5-1 and placing 3rd  at the Panther Invitational hosted by Sacramento City College on Saturday, September 20th. Valdez had two pins, a technical fall, a major decision and a decision in his five victories. The highlight was a taut match-up against Janik Santana of West Valley College that resulted in an 11-10 decision for Sergio. Valdez leads the Trojans with six wins on the season. This week Skyline has a dual match against West Hills College in Colinga on Wednesday, September 24th and competes in the Modesto Invitational on Saturday, September 27th.



Skyline Ties One and Loses Another in Opening Matches

Skyline College opened its 2008 season with a tie against Shasta College 21-21 and a loss to Santa Rosa Junior College 30-12 in opening matches conducted in Santa Rosa on Friday, September 12th.

Against Shasta College, Skyline was paced by Sergio Valdez (125lb), Jairo Rodriguez (133lb) and Kyle Vance (197lb) who were all victorious. In addition, Joe Heffelmire (157lb) won by pinning his opponent and Matt Schugg (Heavyweight) secured a win in the final match of the session securing the tie.

Against Santa Rosa Junior College, the Trojans lost the first four matches and quickly trailed by a score of 17-0. From that point on, the match was evenly contested with Joe Heffelmire and Kyle Vance winning their second matches of the day and Tim Ferrick (184lb) winning his first.  

Skyline returns to action on Saturday, September 20th competing in the Sacramento City College Tournament in Sacramento. The tournament begins at 9A.
