TROJANS SMASH COLTS FOR SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN April 24, 2009 SKYLINE 17, CANADA 9 BOX SCORE With just three games remaining in the 2009 regular season the Skyline Trojans took a big step towards earning an automatic birth in this years California Community College Baseball playoffs with a 17-9 win over their closest competition, third place Canada College of Redwood City. The win moves Skyline (32-13, 16-5), two and a half games ahead of Canada with just three to play, and just a game and a half out of the top spot in the Coast Conference Pacific Division. Canada and Skyline had split their season series heading into Thursdays game, with two close games, a 2-1 win by Canada and a 6-5 win for Skyline. The series finale turned out to be a slugfest, producing 27 runs, 38 hits, including seven home runs. The Trojans sent their ace, All-American Greg Gonzalez (7-6, 3.07) out to the mound in the first inning and he got the Trojans back into the dugout with a quick first inning that featured two of his nine strikeouts on the day. In a sign of things to come, leadoff hitter Lucas Hagberg homered to start off the inning, and David Gregory had an RBI double to give Skyline a 2-0 lead. After Gonzales struck out the side in the second, the Trojans scored three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by Cody Larson's two run home run and Sean Rodgers RBI double. In the third Skyline added three more when Hagberg homered again, this time a three run shot to make the scored 8-0. Gonzales struggled with his control on a windy day but lasted five innings, picking up his seventh win of the season, striking our nine and allowing just two earned runs on three hits. In the sixth inning Cody Larson hit his second home run of the day, a three run blast, and in the seventh he added to an incredible day at the plate, launching his third home run to straight away center field, a two run shot giving him seven RBI on the day. Not to be outdone, Hagberg hit his third home run of the game in the eight inning, another three run bolt, giving the pair of Trojans sluggers a combined eight hits, 14 RBI, and six home runs. The Trojans can clinch a trip to this years playoffs with a win this weekend at home against San Jose City College, first pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm. |
