This EMT-B course (EMC 410)
represents the first phase of training in the Emergency Medical Technician
career struct ure.
The course covers all techniques of emergency medical care presently within
the scope of practice of the EMT-B. The EMT-B course prepares the student
to render basic life support at the scene of a medical emergency and during
transport to a medical facility. Upon successful completion of the EMT-B
course, students will be awarded an EMT-B Course Completion Certificate.
This certificate will enable the student to apply for EMT-B Certification.
EMT-B Certification is required for employment with an ambulance company
and for entrance into the Fire Service or paramedic school.
The EMT B course provides the student with a broad foundation of knowledge
in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and emergency care procedures.
An EMT prepared in this manner can respond to a medical emergency with
the expediency and accuracy that is expected and required. Classroom instruction
is enriched with additional instruction provided by other health care
professionals including physicians, nurses, paramedics, and emergency
medical technicians.
The EMT-B course provides a strong foundation for students entering other
careers involving pre-hospital emergency medical care, including paramedicine,
search and rescue, fire fighting, the park service, and law enforcement.
The program also provides pertinent education for those considering other
health fields including medicine, nursing, and physician assisting.

Physical Examination
|
All students attending the clinical rotations in the emergency
department and on an ambulance must be in good health and free from
any communicable disease.
All students enrolled in the EMT-B program are required to obtain
a physical examination.
The physical examination must determine that the student is in
good health and free from any communicable disease. A TUBERCULIN
SKIN TEST must be part of the examination.
The student must submit the results of the TB skin test and a statement
(or form) from the physician that the student is in good health
and free from any communicable disease.
THE SKIN TEST RESULTS AND STATEMENT MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE PROGRAM
DIRECTOR.
Students who plan to work on an ambulance will be required
to take the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.
This examination, including the TB skin test will meet the program
requirement. The DOT examination form may be obtained from the DMV.
The DOT examination does not include the TB skin test; please request
this test from your physician, or obtain the skin test from the
Skyline College Health Center.
Students who do not comply with this requirement will not be eligible
for EMT-B certification.

Emergency Medical Care
Courses
EMC 410 EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN BASIC (7)
A total of 80 lecture hours and 96 lab hours, plus 3 hours per week
by arrangement which will include a minimum of 8 hours in a local Emergency
Department and 12 hours riding with a local ambulance company.
Prerequisite: Completion of EMC. 425 or a valid Healthcare Provider CPR
card.
The first phase of training in the Emergency Medical Technician Career
Structure. Covers all techniques of emergency medical care presently considered
within the responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician, as well
as all operational aspects of the job the EMT will be expected to perform.
Meets state and national certification requirements for EMT-B.
Students are required to spend additional time outside of the scheduled
class time to complete the hospital and ambulance rotations, and to take
the final written and skills examination.
Course prerequisite:
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation
(AED) Certification will be required by lesson 5 with either a Healthcare
Provider Card from the American Heart Association, or a Professional
Rescuer Card from the American Red Cross.
Course requirements (not prerequisites):

A physical examination and a TB skin test are required. All students
attending the clinical rotations in the emergency department and on
an ambulance must be in good health and free from any communicable
disease.

A student who wants to ride with the San Mateo County Emergency Ambulance
provider must complete the Hepatitis B vaccination, or sign a waiver.

EMC 415 EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN-1: REFRESHER (1.5 or 2)
California EMT I certificate that is current or has not been expired
for more than four years.
A three or four day course that provides EMT’s with the opportunity
to renew their EMT I certificate. The three-day course provides 24 hours
of Continuing Education Units. The four-day course provides the necessary
written and skills testing. May be repeated for credit as necessary to
meet certification requirements.
Upon successul completion of the refresher course, students will receive
a course completion certificate that will enable them to apply for EMT-B
recertification.
NOTE: A student must have a current cardiopulmonary
resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) card to be
eligible for certification. CPR and AED certification is not provided
in the refresher course. This certification is not required to enroll
in the course.

1.5 units of academic credit will be awarded for attending the
3 day course.

2 units of academic credit will be awarded for attending the
4 day course.

EMC. 425 CPR: HEALTH CARE PROVIDER (.5)
(Credit/No Credit.)
Total of eight lecture hours.
This course will qualify students for CPR certification for health care
providers. Includes instruction pertinent to adult, child and infant CPR.
May be repeated for credit a maximum of three times. Transfer credit:
CSU.
EMC. 665 SELECTED TOPICS IN EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
(.5 or 1 or 1.5 or 2)
Eight lecture hours per .5 unit.
This course is designed to review and update specific topics fundamental
to the practice of an Emergency Medical Technician or paramedic. Some
of these topics may be taken for continuing education units. May be repeated
for credit as topics vary.
