1. What is the deadline for applying to the Honors Transfer Program?
There is no deadline. If you are eligible, you may apply to the program at any
time.
2. Can I apply to the program even if it looks like I won't be able to
complete all the HTP requirements before I transfer?
Yes! In order to earn an Honors Certificate of Completion, you must complete
a minimum of 15 honors units in at least for 4 honors courses. However, if
you transfer before that time, you will of course not be penalized. Each
honors course that you take will be so designated on your transcript.
3. Are honors courses more difficult than regular non-honors courses?
No, honors courses are not more difficult. The same content is covered, but
what is different is the kinds of work that you
do. For example, an honors course means that you will have more interaction
with your teachers and fellow students in a seminar-type environment. You
may be doing projects rather than papers, etc.
4. Will I have to take honors courses every semester?
No. You do not have to take honors courses every semester. For example, if
there is no course that you need offered in the fall semester, you can wait
for the spring semester and register for any courses for which you are
eligible. Every semester we add different classes.
5. For whom is the program designed?
The Honors Transfer Program is designed for eligible students whose goal is
to transfer, and who wish to participate in challenging, academically
rigorous courses in classes with other highly motivated, high-achieving
students, to better prepare for university work.
6. What are the advantages of being in the Honors Transfer Program?
Honors students take special sections of regular courses, or in some cases,
special 1-3 unit seminars in a particular discipline, taught by inspiring
instructors in a stimulating environment with other students who seek
intellectual challenge to prepare themselves to succeed in a university
setting.
A designated Honors counselor provides Honors students with academic and
personal counseling in planning both short- and long-term educational and
career goals.
Honors students have enhanced transfer and educational opportunities in the
form of scholarships, priority consideration to selective universities,
honors recognition on transcript and degree, leadership and community
service activities, and cultural enrichment.
7. What is needed to complete the program?
To complete the program, students must:
·
achieve a
minimum overall 3.25 GPA.
·
achieve a
minimum 3.25 GPA in at least 15 honors units in at least 4 honors courses.
·
complete
the community service requirement (16 hours of service).
8. Do students have to take all Honors courses offered?
No, to complete the Honors Program, students need to complete only 15 units
of honors course work--in at least 4 honors courses. Honors courses are
added to the offerings each semester.
9. Do students have to be enrolled in the program to take Honors
courses?
No, students not enrolled in the program may take Honors courses. Students
enrolled in Honors courses will be expected to complete the work being done
by Honors students in that class. These classes will be designated as
"honors" courses on the transcript of any student taking the
class.
10. Will the workload on the honors students be greater?
The workload of the honors student is the same as for the general
population of students under the Carnegie unit, that is, two hours of work
outside for every hour inside the classroom. The difference in an honors
course is in the kind of work honors students are doing; more time will be
spent on higher-level materials and assignments and less, if any, time
spent on basic skills.
11. How will the content and conduct of honors courses be different?
Honors courses are different, not necessarily harder. Topics covered are
the same; the difference is in the teaching and learning experience. For
example, in an honors course, students should expect more reliance on
primary sources. The materials may be covered at greater depth and/or more
intensively. Courses may be delivered with the use of technology.
In addition, students will experience a more interactive learning
environment, such as discussions, seminars, oral presentations, and
in-class workshops. Emphasis is placed on skills needed at the university
level, such as written analysis, critical thinking, research, and
collaborative learning. Also, courses will incorporate a multi-cultural,
multi-perspective, and, occasionally, multi-discipline approach to teaching
and learning.
12. What recognition will Honors students receive?
Each Honors course completed will be noted "Honors" on the
student's transcript. Students who have completed the program will be
recognized at graduation. Transcripts and degrees are inscribed with a
notation that the student is a graduate of the Honors Transfer Program. In addition, many universities
recognize academic excellence as reflected by completion of the program.
