Are you a Skyline College
instructor interested in teaching an honors course?
If you would enjoy teaching
academically talented students in a challenging atmosphere, you are invited
to apply to teach your IGETC course(s) in the Honors Transfer Program.
Here is a brief overview of what your honors courses might entail:
Honors courses are different, not necessarily harder. Topics covered are
the same; the difference is in the teaching and learning experience. For
example, in an honors course, students should expect more reliance on
primary sources as texts for the course and/or as resources for student
research projects. The materials may be covered at greater depth and/or
more intensively. Courses may be delivered with the use of technology as an
instructional tool. In addition, students may be expected to participate in
an interactive learning environment, such as discussions, seminars, oral
presentations, and in-class workshops. Emphasis is placed on skills needed
at the university level, such as written analysis, critical thinking,
research, and collaborative learning. Also, courses may incorporate a multi-cultural,
multi-perspective, and, occasionally, multi-discipline approach to teaching
and learning.
Suggestions for teaching pedagogy and samples of honors course outlines are
available. Most courses will be offered as honors sections of regular
courses. Courses will be selected to reflect a balanced and broad-based
IGETC curriculum. A fairly set rotation of courses will be offered to give
both students and faculty an opportunity to do long-range planning. For
example, statistics will be offered in the fall semester and calculus in
the spring semester; English 110 in the spring and English 165 in the fall,
etc. Another consideration in the selection of courses is to offer not only
"closed" courses, those open only to honors students, but also to
offer "open" courses, in which non-honors students may also
enroll and do honors-level work.
If you would like to be a part of this exciting Program, which offers our
students many educational benefits, please send me your "statement of
interest" form, accompanied by one letter of recommendation, either
from a colleague or your dean. I hope to hear from you,
Katherine Harer
