ED POLICY COMMITTEE
NOTES
March 6, 2007
Academic
Senate Report
Change
in Graduation Requirements
Ed Policy
is playing no special role in this matter, except to monitor the progress the
changes as they are implemented on the college. The changes were approved by the Curriculum Committee. At this point in time, we are
just waiting to see when the changes will be implemented. Tadashi mentioned that his department
is looking at possibly adding alternative classes (equivalent to Math 120) that
would satisfy the Math requirement.
Degree
Audit (Sherri Hancock)
Sherri
mentioned that the Degree Audit System will be piloted this Spring. She indicated that A&R ran several
compliance reports from students who had applied for AA/AS degrees and that
everything seemed to be working well.
DAS will be piloted with counselors (via Websmart) to see if counselors
are getting the information they need to help students. DAG committee is still working on ways
to note student credit for transfer courses through the electronic version
(DAS) instead of the paper form that we currently use.
DSPS
Lynne
Douglas has been working on a timeline and procedures for DSPS
accommodations. At this point, it
has been taken to the Office of Civil Rights. Consultants The Galvin Group who help administer and
interpret the federal laws At this
point, there are many loose ends.
Student
Grievance
Student
Grievance currently responds to academic matters. What we have in place is a ladder of appeals. The
college recently had a hearing in which Lori was the hearing officer. Lori found that there were holes in the
procedure: 1) Lori did not think we highlighted enough in the appeals form that
this appeal must have nothing to do with employment issues. It should be clear that this would be
related to discipline and academic issues; 2) Lori had concerns about the
make-up of the committee – originally there was to be one student on the
committee, but when the committee recently met there were 2 -3 students. She also found other things she wanted to
change. Sherri indicated that she
will locate and send the electronic version of the recent Student Grievance
form.
Academic
Code (Cindy Moss)
Cindy
MossŐs HONORS Statistics students Sonja Gugajew and Caitlin Morrison presented
their findings on student and faculty perception on cheating/plagiarism at
Skyline. Notable were that 62% of
the student said that cheating was not a problem, but 70% knew of a student who
had cheated. Cindy would like
suggestions for questions sent to her.
Academic
Renewal Policy (Jacquie Escobar)
Jacquie
Escobar presented on the Academic Renewal Policy. She noted that the current Academic Renewal Policy requires
that students wait a three-year period before being allowed to alleviate
substandard coursework (students must also meet unit and gpa
requirements). Jacquie has
proposed that the policy be changed to one-year wait period for (see attached
form). The committee felt that they
did not have sufficient knowledge and information about the policy to make a
determination at this point.
Jacquie agreed to present further information on the topic at the next
meeting.
