Ed Policy Meeting Notes

From 12-05-06

Present: Hancock, Hughes, Tsuchida, Moss, Leach, Escobar, Mandy Liang

A short Ed Policy meeting preceded the Matriculation Advisory Committee.

The committee expressed little support for the CSM initiative to switch to plus/minus grading.  Although Tadashi stated the plus/minus grading was mathematically slightly more fair, concerns were expressed by administrators and the counselor about negative impacts including student confusion during the transition, and cost of the change in money and time.  Garry said he would report to the Senate that at this time the committee was not supportive of the proposal.

Meeting Notes

From 12-05-06 Matriculation  Advisory Committee

On the 5th of December Ed Policy met as the collegeÕs Matriculation Advisory Committee.  Jennifer Hughes, Mandy Liang, and Jacquie Escobar reported on various components of the Skyline matriculation efforts.

Jennifer reported that Skyline is well down the calendar for matriculation site visits: not until 2011.  Although the most recent budget allocations are still down 14 million from the peak some years ago, this year Skyline will enjoy a $100,000 increase in funding for counseling and assessment compared to last year.  All colleges are reporting undercounts of students served as recorded through the stateÕs MIS Management Information System. As for SkylineÕs efforts at computerized prerequisite checking, Math and English are in the system and operating but other divisions need to get into the system to show that they are systematically enforcing prerequisites by Fall 2007 in preparation for the accreditation site visit.  Another aspect of matriculation slated to be computerized is the system for academic performance early alerts.

Mandy reported extensively on what is happening with the assessment.  The new test/retest policy is already in place and will be in the next class schedule. Test validation is taking place according to schedule.  Off-site testing is gong to be piloted at local high schools and the plan is for Skyline to start offering proctor services for the GED and distance learning courses.

The Fresh Look Project has been looking at models for streamlining on the Ohlone College model the flow chart that students look at for the steps to registration,  and  already in place is a calendar of in-person new student orientations to take the place of on-line orientations.

Jacquie reported that the Orientation Committee added additional in-person orientations, including evening, day, and weekend; as well as Spanish and Chinese Orientations. There has been a high increase in the number of student attending in-person orientations, resulting in students being better prepared to meet with their counselors during their initial appointment.

For the Spring 2007 semester, the Orientation Committee will address the following issues: Review and update the online orientation
Update the Orientation Student Handbook
Update the Orientation script
Conduct research on the effectiveness of both the on-line and in-person orientation
