Ed Policy Meeting Notes

Tuesday, November 7, 2006

Present: Sullivan, Masare, Nicol, Leach, Hancock, Hughes, Escobar, Mandy Liang

1.  Read and Approve Meetings, May and September

The minutes for May and September were approved as presented.

2. Report from Academic Senate

3. Assessment: Proposed Policy Changes

The committee approved the following:

  1. Students will be allowed to retest 14 calendar days from the date of the initial test. The 14 days includes the day of the initial test. It was agreed that this would be in the studentsŐ best interest, especially for those students who might be registering during the late registration period. Current policy of 21 days is too long.
  2. Students may take the placement tests once a course has been completed in the sequence (English, Math or ESL), provided that two years have elapsed since the time the course in the English, Math or ESOL sequence was completed. Completed is defined as receiving a grade of A, B, C, CR, D, F, NC. Withdrawals (W) grades are not included.
  3. It was agreed to keep the current test validity time frame the same. Currently, our policy states that test results are good for two years.
  4. It was agreed that the Matriculation Coordinator may continue to grant exceptions to the current testing policies on a case by case basis. There are usually 3-4 exceptions per year, which are usually granted for serious illness or personal hardship on the day of testing.  Jennifer and Mandy will provide a report once per term on the number of exceptions granted.

4. Degree Audit Steering Committee Recommendations: Sherri

Sherri provided a review of the proposed changes to the gpa calculation for the Associate Degree provided by a subcommittee of the ESC. The recommendations of the Degree Audit Steering Committee were modified after consultation with legal services at the ChancellorŐs Office. The VPs have reviewed and approved the modified recommendations. The committee approved the modified recommendations. Garry will forward these as informational to the Academic Senate.

5. The Ed Policy will convene as the Matriculation Advisory Committee at the December meeting.
