Minutes from Ed Policy

  1. Minutes from December 7th

The minutes from the December 7, 2004 meeting were approved with minor changes.

  1. Report from AS Governing Council

Garry reported on items from the last AS Governing Council held o n December 10, 2004. One item of discussion had been that of creating signage to post in all classrooms that students should turn off cell phones during class time. The faculty are not in favor of such posting. Individual faculty members have different approaches for cell phone use and wanted to continue to handle it on an individual basis. No further action necessary. The faculty are, however, in favor of a survey to be distributed to faculty regarding plagiarism to determine scope of problem, adequacy of existing policy, etc.

There was also mention at the meeting of the request from a community member for a pictorial exhibit of European Americans. Jennifer and Sherri indicated that his request has been discussed at other meetings and that research has been conducted regarding such requests. The exhibit will take place; however, date and location have yet to be determined.

  1. Academic Integrity

Garry distributed a draft of the survey that will be used to obtain faculty input regarding academic integrity issues. It has been recommended that the survey be kept brief so that faculty can complete quickly. If it is too lengthy, there is concern that it will not be completed and returned. A few suggested changes were made. Tadashi will work with Garry to complete the revisions. The survey will then be forwarded to Nick who will coordinate the posting of this to the web for faculty to complete.

  1. Fine tuning of AP, CLEP, CBE

The committee reviewed the latest draft of the revised language for AP, CLEP and Credit by Examination that we would include in the 2005-06 catalog. There is to be a chart to accompany the AP credit policy, so that students would be able to see the ÒcontentÓ credit they would receive for various AP exams. Other colleges include such a chart with the policy in their catalogs. Jennifer will review the language with Linda Rosa and report back at the next meeting. In addition, she will determine how close Linda Rosa is to completing the chart. (She has already presented a draft, modeled after Canada, to the curriculum and degree audit steering committees). If all is agreed upon, we can then forward the revised language to Regina, even if the chart for AP follows at a later date. This information could then be included in the catalog.
