Executive Board Report

Vicki presented a copy of the new executive board report. It is graphically more interesting and will also be posted on the Skyline website. Regina noted that faculty and staff like the president’s communication style and campus updates.

Skyline View Letter to the Editor re: Security

Vicki Morrow circulated a copy of a letter she wrote to a Skyline View columnist in response to an article complaining about campus security. The letter is not a rebuttal, but informs the campus of what the security department does do. The letter cites our outstanding safety record. She asked the committee to notify her if they are aware of a security matter.

Facilities Update

Richard Inokuchi distributed an update on campus construction projects. The remodel is complete on Pacific Heights and the building is ready for the swing. Zone control projects in Building 1 will be completed by January 31. The underground work in the new building site is completed, trenches are being backfilled and re-paving with concrete will be done by January 28. Other repairs will occur outside of Building 5, between Buildings 1 and 8 near the auto shop, near Parking Lot 3, and on the north side of Building 2. Heavy remodeling in the Gym begins in February and will be completed by spring 2006. PE classes will move back at that time. There may be some impact to Staff Lot 3. Plans for Building 8 were approved and Swinerton is preparing bid documents. They hope to begin construction in June. The athletic fields are almost completed.

Ilka noted that the handicapped door button near Bridget Fischer’s office in Building 1 is not easily seen. Facilities will paint around the area to highlight it. Richard will also check into heat variances in the buildings between classrooms and hallways as students and instructors have noticed a problem. He will check the classrooms and notify deans and faculty. Vicki asked him to notify everyone in his next facilities update about the new system. He explained that heat is now regulated by a computer in Facilities. Arthur noted that the air duct in his office was disconnected (Building 2-112) so Richard will investigate.

Classified Hiring

Regina incorporated the feedback that she initially received and has presented a priorities process. She worked with faculty, classified staff, and administrators. College Council moved to implement this.

European American Issues Forum Display

Lou Calabro with European American Issues Forum (EAIF) submitted a written request to mount a display that provides photos/bios of prominent local European Americans. It was mounted at Cañada and the San Francisco Public Library and he wants it at Skyline. Vicki discussed this topic with college managers’ and others in order to determine the policy governing this request. The EAIF is an organization focused around white people and is a conflict with Skyline’s pro-diversity culture. We need to do what is legally correct and educationally appropriate. Because it is a controversial issue, Vicki discussed it with our district counsel. The Civic Center Act requires that a public facility allow people to use our facility. Vicki also noted that we cannot prevent Calabro from using Skyline’s name when he makes future proposals to other schools. She mentioned that Cañada mounted his display with other exhibits to contextualize it. Vicki discussed this at the Managers’ Meeting and the following suggestions were made.

    1. Give a low profile to the display
    2. Provide competing perspectives and present multiple displays on a variety of related topics
    3. Offer one nearby display that talks about hate crimes
    4. Present a display that identifies other European Americans — gay people, leftists, non-conservatives, etc.

The district has a five-day limit on the display. A possible location for the display may be outside of the library in Building 5. Vicki is going to ask Calabro for a written piece on the bios and Donna Bestock will verify the information. Arthur proposed it as an exhibit in the Gallery Theatre, which might be good for presenting multiple displays. The committee is concerned that it may have an underlying message promoting hatred. Donna noted that MOT has ways to detect hate materials. Vicki suggested that the group address this topic with their constituencies and we will discuss it further at the February meeting. She will also discuss the topic at the next Managers’ Meeting.

Tsunami Relief

Phi Theta Kappa will hold a candy sale on Valentine’s Day to raise funds for tsunami relief. Sherri will find out more details and Vicki will send out an announcement.
