CLASSIFIED COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES, April 4, 2003

Present:  Nathalie Berwick, Barbara Daley, Pablo Gonzalez, Linda Herda, Felix Perez, Phyllis Porcar, Theresa Tentes, Megan Ton, and Kathy Z-Taylor.

Approved minutes from March 6 meeting as submitted.

Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser – Pablo Gonzalez reported that it was a great success. There were 120 tickets sold in advance plus approximately another 20 either last minute or at the door, making a total of 140. Our expenses were approximately $250 for paper products, balloons, beverages (soda and water) and cakes. The use of the hall, food, flowers, coffee and cookies were all donated. This represents approximately $3000 for in-kind donations. Pablo asked for a special thank you to Theresa Tentes for all her help. We will plan ahead earlier for next year. We will also consider approaching banks, service organizations, Costco, etc. with a specific letter of request and purpose.  Pablo felt that all the community people who helped this year would be willing to help us again next year. Phyllis Porcar wrote thank you letters to these community people.

Treasurer’s Report – Theresa Tentes reported that we deposited a total of $2359 into our account. This includes ticket sales and raffle ticket monies.

Museum of Tolerance – Barbara Daley reported that Pablo Gonzalez and Kathy Fitzpatrick will be leaving this weekend with the next group going to the museum. When they return there will be a debriefing meeting together with alumni on Wednesday, 4/9.  Barbara said that they are hoping for future groups to be able to attend but that it all depends on budget.

SAIF – This committee has been reactivated and there is a meeting scheduled for April 10.

Strategic Planning – There are no more meetings scheduled. Bernie Blackman should issue soon the official mission and vision statements.

College Council – Phyllis Porcar reported that the Summerhill Homes project is underway. The few remaining trees which are flagged will be saved and replanted when the project is finished. There has been some concern over the disturbance of the wild life in the area. An upgrade on the hot water system in Building 8/Cosmetology is underway. During spring break week the stained paneling on the 1st floor of Building 5 and the stage floor in the main theater will be replaced. A recent Waste Diversion report stated that Skyline College is successfully recycling 69% of their waste. Skyline College sent 4 bus loads of students, staff and faculty to Sacramento. It appears that the voice of this huge rally is making some impact. Around campus there are now emergency evacuation chairs on every floor that does not have ground level access. Better communication and signage needs to be issued.

Academic Senate – President, Connie Beringer has contacted our Classified Council President, Phyllis Porcar about sending a Classified Staff rep to their meetings which are held twice a month. It was felt though that if we sit in on their meetings we would have to reciprocate and invite one of their members to attend our meetings. There may not be many subjects of interest that we really have in common with them. It was decided that we will respond to Academic Senate with a note of thanks but unfortunately we do not have any one available to attend meetings twice a month. We are all committed to other committees already. If a special issue comes up that involves or concerns us directly we would be happy to send a rep for that one meeting. We are pleased to be included in the e-mail distribution of their meeting minutes.

Next meeting will be Thursday, May 1 and will be a potluck lunch meeting. Nathalie Berwick agreed to help Phyllis in the planning of this event.
