Bernie distributed a handout from his office titled “Enrollment Management – Fall 2002”. It shows unduplicated and duplicated enrollment counts for the current semester. The trend shows an increase of 11-13%. The handout also shows the breakdown of enrollment by gender, age, ethnic background, goal, etc. The purpose of the Strategic Planning Task Force is to look further into the future of Skyline College and integrate planning and information. There are 8 Classified Staff participants on this committee: Amory Buisch, Kathy Fitzpatrick, Sandy Kirkpatrick, Ken Jew, Felix Perez, Phyllis Porcar, Tiffany Reardon, Betty Schlaepfer. The Task Force started in Fall of 2001 and dealt with environmental issues impacting our college. Specific strategic issues were identified and this first half of the task force project was completed in Spring 2002. The second half of the task force project, this fall, is to look at the mission statement, vision, values and goals of the college. The first of 3 power packed sessions will be held next Wednesday, 9/11. The task force will submit their report to the College Council in the Spring 2003. Felix Perez expressed concern about low participation from certificated staff on the committee.
Minutes were approved from August 1, 2002.
The balance in our account is $28.57. This includes $20.31 left over from the retreat. Money has already been set aside for the Classified Scholarship and Staff/Faculty Scholarship. Expected expenditures for this year are: $250 for the end-of-the-year festivities, $25 for the retirement plaque and $18 for Classified Scholarship.
Theresa also shared with us several thank you notes she received from students who were recipients of the Classified Council and Staff/Faculty scholarships.
Fundraising Committee members: Therese Tentes, chair
Pablo Gonzalez, Ileana Gadea, JoAnn Koenig, Maria Mendez , David Lange and Char Wulbers/Ad Hoc.
There is no faculty/staff development money in the state budget. This means there is no money for a classified retreat (need approx. $6000-7000). Maybe we could consider a mini one-day retreat this year at an off campus site, with one or two workshops and food.
Fund Raising Ideas:
Food booth at the South San Francisco Day in the Park (too late for this year but should definitely plan for next year)
Gift baskets for raffle still a good idea/maybe a specialty theme basket sponsored by Auto Tech or Cosmetology with gift certificates for services from their department
Fourth of July fireworks sale
Dinner at Chevy’s Restaurant (they donate back to us a percentage of the income)
White Elephant Sale/Craft Sale
“Funny” Fashion Show
Spaghetti Feed Dinner off campus
Senior Dance
Holiday Tea
Big Fun Sunday
Carnival Game – Dunk the President
Ask for dues like Academic Senate does
We definitely need to think in bigger terms. We could possibly borrow from the scholarship money to pay up front costs for these fundraisers.
A date was set for a Potluck Luncheon on Thursday, 10/31. Halloween costumes will be optional. We will set out a donation jar at the luncheon, because we do not want to impose dues. Maria Mendez and Phyllis Porcar volunteered.
SB235 – Cathy Welch reported on the new law that has gone into effect stating that the district has to have union appointed and approved members of all shared governance committees. This means that if you are asked to serve on a shared governance committee you have to be appointed and approved by the union. You will be required to report back to the union on the committee’s actions. Please notify Cathy if you are asked to serve on such a committee so she can notify John Martinez our union president. President Fran White has requested a Memorandum of Understanding from the union as to how this procedure will be carried out. Hand-outs were distributed on Frequently Asked Questions about SB235 and a listing of Skyline College Committees with membership and meeting info.
In response to last month’s request, Rachel Hefler brought copies of Skyline College Crime Awareness and Campus Security handouts.
