Selecting a Resume Format
To enhance your job search it is important to begin by selecting a resume format that best reflects your skills, abilities and previous work accomplishments to the employer.  Choosing the right resume format will make the difference between creating a 'goo' resume and a 'great' resume. Here are a few tips to help you make this decision wisely.

The Chronological Format
The Chronological Resume categorizes your work experience in chronological order starting with the most recent, then working backwards. This is an excellent format for those of you who have been committed and focused on a specific career field. Choose the Chronological Resume Format if:

  • You want to show your progressive advancement of responsibility in a specific field (e.g. You went from a sales clerk, to a department manager, to store manager, and finally, regional manager);
  • You want to show an employer your stable work history;
  • Your current job is in the same field for which you are applying;
The Functional Format
The Functional Resume format presents your experience in skill groups which are relevant to the work you want to do and group your accomplishments under these headings. Choose the Functional Resume Format if:
  • Your work experience and job titles are not related to your job objective;
  • Your experience comes mostly from volunteer work, student activities, or your academic experiences;
  • Your job titles do not reflect your true level of responsibility or accomplishments;
  • You want to emphasize specific skills that are closely related to your job objective;
  • Your have gaps in your work history;
  • You are making a career change and you want to illustrate how skills acquired in one setting can be transferred to a new field.
The Combination Format
The Combination Resume format combines both the elements of the chronological and functional (skill groups) resumes. Choose the Combination resume format if:
  • You want to emphasis specific skills and accomplishments that meet the need of the job, even though you may not have an extensive work history.
The Scannable Format
A Scannable Resume is a resume which is set-up to be read by resume scanning software. A computer reads your [paper] resume and extracts important information about you, including education, experience, specific skills, etc. Your information is entered into a database from which employers search all electronically stored resumes according to specific job criteria. Choose a scannable resume if:
  • The company for which you are applying only accepts scannable resumes;
  • You are intending to submit your resume on-line. Although some web-sites will allow you to submit word text, many are switching over to newer versions of application tracking system that can take resumes via e-mail, which automatically transfers resumes into a database without scanning.
  • Note: Sample scannable resume includes a Keywords Summary heading.
