Why do I have to complete the FAFSA Application?

Students must complete the FAFSA application since funds to pay students come out of the schools federal work-study (FWS) allocation specifically for community service related work.

What if I’m usually not Pell Grant eligible?

You do not have to be Pell Grant eligible to work under America Counts program therefore students are always recommended to apply. To determine eligibility for FWS students must have an unmet need amount that is less than their budget which will be determined when you application is processed.

What if I only want to volunteer?

Student who wish not to complete the FAFSA application and/or are determined ineligible for FWS funds have the option to volunteer however must still complete the America Counts application, interview, fingerprinting and TB testing.

What if I don’t understand how to fill out the FAFSA application?

Contact our office or bring in all you required paperwork and we will walk you through the process.

When and where do tutors work?

Tutors arrange a schedule with a participating elementary school supervisor around their class schedule. Tutoring generally occurs during school hours and in after-school programs at one of the several schools in the area.

What if I don’t have experience as a tutor or with children?

The Learning Center and the elementary schools provide training. What is important is that tutors are dependable, willing to learn and are eager to help children be successful.

What sort of children will I work with?

Tutors are matched with children who are reading below their grade level. Tutors work with the same children throughout the semester or the school year developing a strong, mentoring relationship.

Do I need to speak a second language?

No. If a tutor does have second language skills, they are usually placed with children who would benefit from their bilingual skills. However, tutors who are monolingual in English are also welcomed.
