Information about the ESOL 810 Course

Course Description 
This course is for pre-intermediate nonnative speakers of English.

Course outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

I.  Writing

  • Write a group of related sentences which tell a story using simple structures.

II.  Reading 

  • Read simple or modified English text applying strategies such as previewing, scanning, and word analysis and utilizing a vocabulary of the 1500 high-frequency core words of everyday written English.

III.  Speaking 

  • Sustain a short conversation which shows control over questions, short answers, positive and negative statements, and basic intelligibility and phonemic awareness.

IV.  Listening

  • Follow two- and three-step instructions and understand simplified, scaffolded lectures in a familiar context.

An additional text may be required during the course. Also, please bring an English-English dictionary of your choice. These are good ones:

  • Longman Dictionary of American English
  • Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
  • The American Heritage Dictionary for Learners of English

Translation dictionaries are useful for you at home, but please do not bring them to class. In class, please bring only English-English dictionaries.

Required materials and resources for class:

  • Notebook with white, 8 ½ x 11 sized paper (no smaller, please)
  • A cassette tape or another way to record your voice (digital recording is OK, too)
  • One ESOL HBA folder (in the bookstore at Skyline)

Evaluation

Grades are A, B, C (all passing) or D (not passing). Grades are based 30% on regular weekly assignments and homework, 50% on essays and midterms, and 20% on the final in-class essay.

Jan 16 – First day of classes.
Jan 29 - Last day to drop with a refund/last day to add
February 9 – Last day to drop without a “W”
February 16-19 – Declared Recess (President’s holiday)
April 2-8 – Spring recess (no classes)
April 26 – Last day to drop with a “W”
May 16 – board-graded writing exam
May 17 – final exam
May 18 – Last day of ESOL classes (other classes continue)
