Course Information

 


Course Description
This course offers an in depth, hands on practical learning experience within the sports medicine program. Students assist in injury prevention, emergency care, rehabilitation and taping and bracing for varsity sthletes under the supervision of the certified athletic trainer. Clinical hoiurs are designed to assist in developing skills required for students majoring in allied helath care professions coaching and for NATA competencies.

Hours by arrangement, Variable units ( 4 hours per week = 1 unit)
Recommended that student complete minimum 6-8 hours per week .

Students interested in medicine, athletic training, physical therapy, massage therapy or other related allied health care professions are candidates for PE211, PE212, PE213, and PE214. Physical education majors, coaches, athletes, school nurses and/or parents of children participating in youth sports may also benefit by taking these classes.

 


Syllabus

Corresponds to PE211, PE212, PE213, and PE214 lectures & labs, depending on semester.

Dependant on specific sports that are in season and injuries that are sustained by athletes in respective sports
Competency sheets due last day of class lecture before final exam!

 

Introductory Notes

 

In this class you're expected to:

Complete competencies related to sports medicine classes. Assist Certified Athletic Trainer in the Athletic Treatment Center and at competition sites in providing treatment of injured athletes.

Grading Information

Your semester grade will be based on the following as they relate to PE 201 &/or PE 202 class topics and injuries that are relevent to athletes being treated in the athletic treatment center ( each catagory is worth 10% of total grade):

1. Participation & self guided study related to the assessment & rehabilitation of athletic injuries
2. Medical record keeping
3. Medical history taking
4. Assessment of injuries to athletes
5. Knowledge & application of modalities
6. Knowledge & ability to demonstrate rehabilitation exercises
7. Knowledge & ability to provide proper first aid & while applying proper precautions & handling of biohazardardous medical waste
8. Professional appearance, behavior
9. Taping & wrapping
10.Initiative and attitude in seeing & doing tasks necessary for efficient functioning of athletic treatment center, and reliability of intern to provide assistance at scheduled times

 

A = 90 to 100 points
B = 80 to 89 points
C = 70 to 79 points
D = 60 to 69 points
F = less than 60 points
