Previous Assignments

For class #40, Wed Nov 18

Continue using the chapter exercises to test your understanding of “The Truth-table Method” and  “The Short Truth-table Method” in Moore & Parker chapter 9.  (Solutions are provided for exercises marked with a triangle.)  Practice symbolizing plain-language arguments, using the tricks Moore & Parker teaches us.  I won’t collect these, but you really should get comfortable with doing these. You should also try examples that ask you to prove that an argument is invalid, including examples where the text does not give you the answers.  (Just test the argument for invalidity in both ways -- each way should always give you the same result.)

Agenda for this class: I will practice solving some the Short Truth-table Method problems.  And I will begin introducing the third technique – Deductions.

For class #39, Mon Nov 16

Read and understand “The Short Truth-table Method” in Moore & Parker chapter 9.

Test your understanding by working on the exercises in chapter 9 for “The Truth-table Method.”   (Solutions are provided for exercises marked with a triangle.)  I won’t collect these, but you really should get comfortable with doing these.  Some are not as easy as the ones we’ve done in class.

Agenda for this class: I will continue introducing the Short Truth-table Method.

For class #38, Fri Nov 13
No class – Veterans Day observance

For class #37, Wed Nov 11
No class – CSM Flex Day

For class #36, Mon Nov 9
Read and understand “The Short Truth-table Method” in Moore & Parker chapter 9.

Test your understanding by working on the exercises in chapter 9 for “The Truth-table Method.”   (Solutions are provided for exercises marked with a triangle.)  I won’t collect these, but you really should get comfortable with doing these.  Some are not as easy as the ones we’ve done in class.

Agenda for this class: I will continue introducing the Short Truth-table Method.

For class #35, Fri Nov 6
Finish “The Truth-table Method” in Moore & Parker chapter 9.

Recommended: Work on the exercises in chapter 9 for “The Truth-table Method.”   (Solutions are provided for exercises marked with a triangle.)  I won’t collect these, but you really should get comfortable with doing these.  Some are not as easy as the ones we’ve done in class.

For class #34, Wed Nov 4
Read the section titled “The Short Truth-table Method” in Moore & Parker chapter 9.

Agenda for this class: I will continue introducing Truth-Functional Arguments.

For class #33, Mon Nov 2
No homework  J

Agenda for this class: I will introduce Truth-Functional Arguments.

For class #32, Fri Oct 30
Take quiz #3.  Then get ready for Halloween  J

Agenda for this class: Derren Brown’s Zombie video.

For class #31, Wed Oct 28
Quiz #3 is running.

Finish reading Moore & Parker, chapter 9 up to but not including “Truth-Functional Arguments”.  The required material appears on pages 297-314 in the 9th edition text (or pages 287-302 in the 8th edition).
When you have understood how to assign claim variables, symbolize compound claims, apply the negation, conjunction, disjunction and conditional functions, and construct truth tables, then take quiz #3.

Agenda for this class: I will review and answer questions for quiz #3.

For class #30, Mon Oct 26
Continue reading Moore & Parker, chapter 9 - Symbolizing Compound Claims in pages 304-314 which you will need to know for Quiz #3.
(These pages explain representing truth functions with electric circuits, learning to use key words as tips for how to symbolize plain language claims, distinguishing “if”, “only-if”, and “if-and-only-if”, their relationship to the antecedent and consequent of conditional claims, and their relationship with claims that specify necessary and sufficient conditions, correctly symbolizing claims connected by the words “either/or”, “unless”, etc.).

Agenda for this class: I will continue introducing Symbolizing Compound Claims as in chapter 9 Truth-Functional Logic on pages 304-314.

For class #29, Fri Oct 23
Continue reading Moore & Parker chapter 9.  Read through the part explaining how to symbolize arguments (for example, the distinction between “if” and “if-and-only-if”).  Continue working on memorizing the truth tables for our four functions – you will soon be responsible for knowing them.

Agenda for this class: I will introduce the long truth-table method in chapter 9 Truth-Functional Logic.

For class #28, Wed Oct 21
Begin reading Moore & Parker chapter 9.  Read through the explanation of the four functions negation, conjunction, disjunction and conditional.  Try to memorize the truth tables for these functions – you will soon be responsible for knowing them.

Agenda for this class: I will continue introducing chapter 9 Truth-Functional Logic.

For class #27, Mon Oct 19
No homework.  But I recommend that you begin reading for quiz #3 -- Moore & Parker chapter 9, pages 297-314 in the 9th edition, or pages 287-302 in the 8th edition.

Agenda for this class:  I will introduce Truth-functional reasoning.

For class #26, Fri Oct 16
No homework.  But I recommend that you begin previewing chapter 9 Truth-functional logic. (We will skip chapter 8, and we will spend several weeks in chapter 9.

Agenda for this class:  I will provide an overview of the second half of the course.
