Here is some background information about me:

Education, specializations, publications

  • BA Knox College, IL (English)
  • MA Purdue University, IN (English)
  • MA College of Notre Dame, CA (French)
  • Certificat de Langue Française, Centre International
d'Etudes Françaises, Université Catholique de l'Ouest, Angers, France

I have also taken courses at Roosevelt University, Loyola University, San Jose State, College of San Mateo, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, and Stanford.

I've been teaching at College of San Mateo since 1968. My specialties are twentieth-century literature, Shakespeare, modern French literature, and French language and culture.

My French courses are primarily in the first-year transfer classroom sequence: French 110 and 120 (and the courses they can be divided into: French 111, 112, 121, 122).

If you'd like to read more about me and French, you might want to visit CSM's French page.

I often teach English writing and literature courses such as basic writing, freshman composition, and introduction to literature.

I usually work also in The Writing Center, which provides the laboratory component of English 828, 838, 848, 100, 110, and 165, and which also gives individual instruction in writing on an open-entry, open-exit basis, with credit/no-credit grading, for students who enroll in English 850.

I also direct and work with language students in our Foreign Language Center, Building 18, Room 112.

My Publications

My scholarly interests focus on recent French fiction. I have published books on Michel Tournier and Françoise Mallet-Joris, articles on a number of French novelists, dozens of reviews of contemporary fiction and of books about that fiction, pedagogical articles, and interviews. You can check out my bibliography if you want the specifics.

For World Language Days at CSM
in fall 2007, my French 110 class
presented Jacques Prevert's
"Page d'écriture" (below).

Prevert poem

This picture below was taken during
World Language Days at CSM
in spring 2005.

It shows me with my French 120 class
at the end of their presentation of
"Boucle d'or," which they
narrated and performed.

This next picture is from World Language Week
in fall 2005, showing me with some
of my English 110 students who were
reading poems in languages
other than English.
