Some characteristics of a successful student 1. Hard work. For some students, my math class is the last one they need to take. I often get the question, "I'm never going to use this again in my life, why do I need to learn this math?" The point isn't just math; it's working hard and putting in a good effort resulting in strong performances on exams. In my class, I will try to instill a hard work ethic that every student can take onto ALL of their future courses. 2. Desire for success. Some students are set on transferring to a top university and so they have a drive to earn the top scores in their classes. Other students have come back to school after working a number of years and are looking to learn something and/or make a career change. These students want to learn something they didn't learn at a younger age. And some students have spent too many years at the community college and figure it's time to transfer. Thus, they are motivated to do well in their classes. The point is, it doesn't matter what drives the desire. It's the desire that drives success. I try to inspire and motivate all my students to succeed in my class, and hopefully to do well in their other classes. 3. Commitment. Setting a goal, following a plan, and executing it all requires your buy-in from the moment you step into the classroom on the first day of class. It is your commitment to the class, your commitment to your goal, your commitment to success that will get you through not only my class, but many other classes. |
