CAOT 104 or equivalent.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

CAOT 105 AS | Units: 1.0 |Transfer: CSU

Students learn the multimedia features of operating system. Students create digital photo albums and movies using windows movie maker. Students will learn to use disk maintenance tools and optimize computer performance.

Students will acquire skills to become independent computer users. Information provided on configuring and purchasing Windows computes. Topics include operating systems and hardware.

Transfer: CSU.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate ability to create multimedia applications such as Digital Photo Album and movies
  • Apply optimization techniques to improve the performance of a computer
  • Perform maintenance tasks including backing up and archiving files

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS:

Illustrated Series, Microsoft Windows Vista™ Complete by Steve Johnson, publisher – COURSE TECHNOLOGY CENGAGE Learning.

  1. A USB/flash drive. One (1) gigabyte will be enough storage. It should cost about $10.00. Check your Sunday paper or on-line.
  2. Pencil, Pen, Highlighter, Notebook etc.-

ASSIGNMENTS:

Most assignments will be given and completed during class time. There will be a performance assessment at the end of each class session that will measure your competency in the topics covered during the session. Lab time is available to all students to ensure assignment completion and reinforcement.

GRADING POLICY:

Your performance evaluation (aka Grade) will be based on: class participation, assignments and performance tests.

Homework assignments...................40%

Final Projects ..................................20%

Grade Option:

You may take this class for either a letter grade or for credit. (To receive credit for the course, you need an average grade of 70 percent or higher.) You can select your option though Websmart.

Please refer to the Skyline College Catalog, pages 28-29, for a complete discussion of Academic Integrity. The two most common kinds of academic dishonesty are: cheating and plagiarism. Any student who is caught obtaining or attempting to obtain academic work through the use of dishonest, deceptive, or fraudulent acts may be dropped from the class and issued a grade of F. Please refer to these pages to make sure you understand all the examples of what may be considered academic dishonesty.

CLASS FORMAT:

  • This class will be conducted with an instructor demonstration followed by a student practice.
  • Class will start PROMPTLY at the scheduled time. If the start time will cause you some difficulty, please discuss this with the instructor.
  • All beepers and phones must be mute during instruction. If you get an EMERGENCY call, please quietly get up and briefly exit the classroom to take the call.
  • Spill proof containers, clearly marked with your name, may be kept on the back table. You MUST take your container when you leave or this privilege will be revoked. No food is allowed in the lab.

CLASS PARTICIPATION:

You are expected to be in class, on time, ready to participate and work for the entire class session. Class starts promptly at the scheduled time. Student breaks will be discussed in the first session.

LAB AVAILABILITY

Assignments may be completed in the Skyline CAOT labs which are located in Building 8, Rooms 8119 and 8121 only. Generally, the labs are open between 8:00-4:30 pm Monday through Friday, with lab hours available on some evenings and Saturdays. The specific lab hours are posted on the classroom doors. The other labs on the campus - in Building 2 or learning center - do not have the software or any support.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

It will be students' responsibility to drop the class through admissions and records.
