PREREQUISITE & RECOMMENDATIONS:

There are no prerequisites for this class. However, each student should have a willingness to learn and participate in each class sessions. There will be a wide skill levels in this classroom. We will try to appropriately accommodate everyone.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

CAOT 104 AS | Units: 1.5 |Transfer: CSU

This course will focus on an introduction to Windows with the Vista Operating System and some fundamental exposure to MS Office 2007 - Word and Excel.  This course is required for various Skyline certificates.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses.
  • Apply the use of computers in sharing data between applications such as MS Office Suite, utility programs, graphic, and multimedia and communication programs.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS:

Microsoft Windows 7: Complete, 1st Edition - by Steve Johnson
Illustrated Series, publisher – COURSE TECHNOLOGY CENGAGE Learning.

  1. A USB/flash drive. One (1) gigabyte size will be sufficient storage for our class.
  2. Pencil, Pen, High lighter, Notebook etc.-

SCHEDULE and ASSIGNMENTS:

Most assignments will be given and completed outside the class time. Lab time is available to all students to ensure assignment completion and reinforcement.

GRADING POLICY:

Your performance evaluation (aka Grade) will be based on: class participation, assignments and performance tests.

Homework assignments...................25%
HBA Hours.........................................5%
Final Projects ..................................20%
Midterm and Final test..................... 50%

Grading Option:

You may take this class for either a letter grade or for pass/fail grade. (To receive credit for the course, you need an average grade of 70 percent or higher.) You can select your grading option though Websmart.

Please refer to the Skyline College Catalog, pages 28-29, for a complete discussion of Academic Integrity. The two most common kinds of academic dishonesty are: cheating and plagiarism. Any student who is caught obtaining or attempting to obtain academic work through the use of dishonest, deceptive, or fraudulent acts may be dropped from the class and issued a grade of F. Please refer to these pages to make sure you understand all the examples of what may be considered academic dishonesty.

CLASS FORMAT:

  • This class will be conducted with an instructor demonstration followed by a student practice

CLASSROOM POLICIES & PROCEDURES:

  • Class will start PROMPTLY at the scheduled time. If the start time will cause you some difficulty, please discuss this with the instructor.
  • All beepers and phones must be mute during instruction. If you get an EMERGENCY call, please quietly get up and briefly exit the classroom to take the call.
  • Spill proof containers, clearly marked with your name, may be kept on the back table. You MUST take your container when you leave or this privilege will be revoked. No food is allowed in the lab.

CLASS PARTICIPATION:

You are expected to be in class, on time, ready to participate and work for the entire class session. Class starts promptly at the scheduled time. Student breaks will be discussed in the first session.

LAB AVAILABILITY

Assignments may be completed in the Skyline CAOT labs which are located in Building 8, Rooms 8119 and 8121 only. Generally, the labs are open between 8:00-4:30 pm Monday through Friday, with lab hours available on some evenings and Saturdays. The specific lab hours are posted on the classroom doors. The other labs on the campus - in Building 2 or learning center - do not have the software or any support.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

To withdraw from a class students should access WebSmart registration or obtain an Add/Drop form from the Office of Admissions and Records in Building 2. Official withdrawal is the responsibility of the student. A withdrawal with a refund is subject to refund deadlines. A student who does not withdraw in accordance with established procedures may receive a failing grade. Refer to the Student Handbook for more information.

Plagiarism is representing the work of someone else as his/her own and submitting it to fulfill academic requirements.
